how to give my brother a honeymoon at Destin?

My brother is getting married next month- small ceremony, no registries. He is building his construction business so he and his fiancee have agreed to postpone honeymoon until $$ is better. B/C the wedding is very small and soon, I'm off the hook for a bridesmaid dress, bridal shower, engagement party etc. and thought that spending extra on a wedding gift is appropriate-

I thought that helping make the honeymoon sooner than later would be a nice idea. But the thought of giving them cash makes me nervous that it might end up in the business.

They both love Destin, FL, so that is my goal- to at least get them there, and point them to good place to stay, eat, etc.

My research shows that airlines do give gift certificates, but they are often not redeemable for the low-price "internet" fares. Any ideas how to get around this? What is the most affordable airline to Destin? They live in the DC area.

I'd love any rec for lodging and dining, or ideas about how to present this.

miller, I think that is a lovely idea but I would discuss it with him first.

He may not be able to take the time away from his new business.

Also, he may not be able to part with the spending money for the trip. I know I spend as much when I get there as I do on my trips.

You can purchase American Express money things that work exactly like money.

I never understand people who don't take honeymoons. The wedding and reception is great but it's only the appetizer. The main course is the honeymoon. It should definitely be romantic and memorable. I suggest you get them a hotel room the night of their wedding at the nicest hotel in town wherever you are. Someplace they wouldn't stay because they couldn't afford it.

In answer to your question... I'm not so sure you can! I think you're right about cash ending up going towards the business, and you certainly can't book airlines tickets for them without their cooperation for scheduling.

The only other thing I can think of is a gift certificate for a great hotel in Destin that they could use sometime over the next year.

I know your heart is in the right place, but I think your plan might have too many complicating factors. I like TG's idea above, to book them a night or two in a fabulous local place to follow the ceremony.

Hey, Miller, what did you decide to do for a vacation with your daughter?

Good luck with all your exciting plans!

I feared this was mission impossible- too many variables indeed. I've been doing so much vacation research for myself, that I have "travel" on the brain, and figured I could help them out, too.

I think I'm going to give them some (most) of my airmiles, and a certificate to a hotel in Destin- there are just so many to search thru!

As for myself, and my daughter, I think we are going to head to Delray beach in May- the turtle idea was intriguing, and Disney in December. If I've accumulated enough Southwest credits, I'd love to go to Santa Fe in the fall.

We visited Disney for 3 days the week before Christmas- it was our "farewell" trip for my husband. I highly recommend that time period if you can escape, and intend to go back this year at the same time. All the suggestions were great- thanks for your input, it really helped.

It's been years since I've met a couple getting married who haven't already had several "honeymoons", so I understand why it isn't the big deal for a lot of folks.

And I agree if he's starting or building a new business, he may not want to take any time away, especially so far away. I'd respect his wishes. Or how about a single night at a fabulous "get away place" near them -- like the Inn at Little Washington?

One of the Honeymoon Cottages in Seaside Florida near Destin would be nice. And a dinner at Josephine's there in the square... very nice.

Miller, can you talk to a travel agent? Maybe s/he would be able to help you?

By the way, are you going to give them gift certificates for food and tours? Or just the air fare and they will have to choose between spending the money they didn't want to spend in the first place or not going?
