Thumbs up to my "pal" out there.
I'm sure "me again" would be quite upset if they took away 8 weeks vacation time per year... I feel we all work hard no matter if your a file clerk or a doctor. We all are entitled to some type of "benefit" for our services. I'm sure "me again" would not accept a job without ANY vacation time...Lets be realistic here. I work hard 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, spend more time with the people I work with than my family. I feel I am definitely "entitled' to a vacation each year.

I work as a server in a "fine dining" resaurant. 25 to 30 hours a week is considered full time, at $3.30 an hour(up from $2.90 as of this past April,WOO-HOO!) Luckily, I make enough in tips to compensate(actuall paycheck is still, ALWAYS, $0.00!). I can take as much time of as I like, whenever I like, but must consider $$$'s lost on those days I am NOT working(no such thing as paid vacation for floor staff) Can't remember the last time I took off on a New Years Eve(or any other holiday)...a crowded night on the town w/ drunken revallers, VS major $$$$....a no brainer!

Wow, I guess considering the type of job you have, we all aren't as lucky to have a "paid" vacation which is still unfair!!! Everyone should receive some "paid" time off...No matter if its 1 day a month or 5 days a year...
Employers lets stop being so greedy!!!
We are not working robots!!! We all need a break.

Hi ...
As someone from Europe (UK) I thought I'd state the UK position.
Legally all employees (full/part time) are entitled to 3 weeks a year. I get 25 days, plus 7 bank holidays. For my level (Senior Analyst Programmer) that is the norm.
Normally I take one 2 week break during the summer & go abroad somewhere (or going to Cornwall/Devon/Wales in the UK)
Then during the winter we will try & go somewhere hot for a week. The rest is taken up with visiting parents etc.
My wife gets slightly less than me, but she has recently changed jobs so her allowance will slow build up again.
Also I only do a 35 hour week.

I may be wrong but I think there is a much different sense or semantic in the use of the word "entitlement" by some here. Yes, you are entitled to a vacation if you think you deserve it or if it would be good for your general well-being. No, you are not entitled to have a guarantee of one that I as a taxpayer pay for. This is what an entitlement program is, Olga.

I totally disagree with the above poster... Yes I am a taxpayer too. I work 40 a week (hard and excellent worker). I feel I am "entitled" to vacation time. By the way, what does being a "taxpayer" have to do with this??? I do have a job too.
Plz explain???

Olga. Being a hard and excellent worker does NOT entitle you to a vacation. It entitles you to your compensation. If your compensation includes vacation days, then yes, you are entitled to such. If vacation days are not part of the package, then you are entitled to whatever compensation package your place of employment provides. As an employee, working hard and excellent is assumed... or you would be unemployed.

Me Again is absolutely correct. You are only entitled to what benefits are included in your employer's compensation package. No more and no less. The employer is also entitled to something in the deal. Your compensation is what you receive for working hard and being productive. The employer is entitled to your hard work.
Vacation benefits vary drastically from company to company. I have worked for companies in the US where I had 25 days vacation, 12 paid holidays, and a paid week off at Christmas. I have also worked for companies that gave their employess paid 3 month vacations every 3-5 years. And I have worked for some that gave the standard 2 weeks vacation to start and it increased to 4 weeks after 10 years. I now work for myself so I have to give myself my vacations. The whole point is that there are many options open to workers in the US. If you don't like your situation then do something about it and don't whine and complain.
The government is NOT the solution to anything. More times than not, the government is the problem.

Yes, and your give yourself vacation time because you feel your "entitled" to receive vacation benefits..Am I correct??? Yes, I do work very hard, and feel as though I am "entitled" to receive vacation time along with being compensated for my job.

Olga. Can't speak for others, but only for my husband and me. Yes, since my husband has his own business, he can have as much vacation time as he likes. However, there is NO money coming in when he is gone and none of the days are paid.
You misunderstand me if you think I don't think free time is important.
There were many years a vacation was impossible for us because we couldn't take the time off and didn't have the money to go anywhere even if we did.
The compensation package your place of employment provides you is a benefit. It costs money. Employees get their compensation in money and benefits.
