How many states have you been to?

I had a person challenge me once with had I been to this park or seen this in the USA because they know we travel to Europe often. Thankfully I had so she left me alone but I know people in Fl that have never been out of this state. I was lucky enough to have grown up in a very historic area and had parents that loved history and travel. Our school trips were not to Disney but D.C. and NYC. We have always had relatives in the D.C. area so it has been a blessing. I still remember my first visit to the House of Representatives with my Brownie troop.

<Are any of you actively trying to set foot in all 50 states?>
Nope, not me. Most of the ones I have visited were not particularly intentional. I have no interest in the ones I have not been to yet. Oh wait, except Louisiana, I haven't been to New Orleans and want to go there.
-35- is my number I think.
6 states I have lived in, most of the others were from a couple different drives, one when I moved cross country from VT to WA and on drives to Florida from New England on winter vacations. I didn't count airport transfers.

When my partner of 42 years died in 2009, we had visited 49, only missing Hawaii. (And yes, all a lot more than changing planes.). Several months later I called American Airlines to see if I could somehow transfer his miles. The agent said as long as his account was still active he could "buy me a ticket" with his miles. I looked them up. He had something like 75,035 miles. I checked. The first thing I found -- first class round trip to Hawaii for 75,000 miles. Lee "bought" me a five week trip to Hawaii, where I scattered his ashes on 5 islands.

Our family is actively trying to hit all of the states. I don't know if we will make it to Alaska and Hawaii with the kids. I am at 41 and will pick up 4 more this summer (Northwest) and 3 next summer (Northeast). The kids (age 6,9 & 12) are at 39. They are missing two random in the middle of the country (Kansas and West Virginia). We missed Kansas by a few miles and I regret not including it at the end of a big trip. Our rule is boots on the ground and layovers don't count. Most of the states we have explored, but there are a few we have just driven through and stopped in. We are blessed to be able to take long road trips each summer. My husband and I have explored many countries in Europe, but have taken a break from overseas travel as we are raising our kids.

Suze, I think because it is such a long flight from Florida and I love to go places that have cool temps. My husband was stationed there so maybe we will do a space a flight one day stopping in California to break up the flight. It is a much sought after space a flight though.

"Oh no, in my 70s and still doing long flights (sometimes) in coach. I didn't realize."
Well yeah - I am hoping to still be taking long flights in my 70s But you never know what the future holds. My mom is 65 and her arthritis is so bad that she doesn't fly at all anymore.

Gawd, Hawaii was SO boring... and I am eternally grateful that something unique inspired me to want to go there for about 72 hours... otherwise I'd be stuck, at this point, with 49 and zero interest in going to Hawaii.
I did see two sitting U.S. Governors while I was there... (neither there officially, or especially predictably ).
Waikiki was 3000 rental cars chasing around in search of 1800 parking spots at night (and I only rented a car for a day, to go see the other side of the island) (so there I was, other side of Oahu, and outside of the standard radio reception range... and of course there wasn't even a bordering state whose stations might then come in loud and clear)

I haven't been to HI either. I'd like to go, but it isn't high on my list. My SIL loves it though. She's been there on vacation many times and even lived there for a couple years. She can't believe my ambivalence about going. But when I think of the places I'd like to go when I am going to plan a trip, it is just never very high on my list - it has never really piqued my interest very much.
