How Long from Baltimore to Charleston?

We are driving from Philly to Charleston in June for a week and a half vacation with several teenagers. We just realized that our youngest (13 yrs) would like to play in a lacrosse tournament in Baltimore during that time. He may have to skip it, but my husband is wondering how long it takes to drive between Baltimore and Charleston?

Thanks for your help!

Go to www.mapquest.com . Plug in for the information you want, and you should get the answer in both miles and time.

I am assuming you mean Charleston, South Carolina and not Charleston, West Virginia. If the former,
I think from Baltimore you can make it in less than 10 hours of actual driving, depending on traffic and how fast you cruise, because the distance is less than 580 miles.
You will take I 95 almost all the way. You would leave I95 when it intersects I 26 between Charleston and Columbia.

If your mean Charleston, WV, the distance is much less, but the roads are not as good. The distance is about 370 miles, but I think your road time would be about 6 hours through Hagerstown.

To the driving time, you need to add time for stops.

The amount of time you are going to take will vary ENORMOUSLY depending on what time of day and what day of the week you find yourself in the WashDC area (assuming you are talking about Charleston SC).

At all costs, avoid the I-95 route between DC and Richmond if you have to travel at afternoon rush hour, anytime Friday afternoon, or anytime all day Sat. or Sun. except VERY early in the morning. There is an excellent way to bypass that stretch by staying in Maryland, and it's been posted on this forum often (search on I-95). If you don't believe me, you will find yourself in gridlock for the entire distance from DC to Richmond -- a distance that should take 1.5-2 hrs. and that can take you 6 or more if you aren't careful.

Thank you for the advice on timing a trip from Baltimore to Charleston, S.C. My sister commutes in the DC area every day, so I know that the traffic can be horrendous there.

Sounds like he's willing to skip the tournament as he has many years of school sports ahead...

Thank you for your help.
