how is this itinerary for first timers-kauai&oahu???
Hi all,
I am planning a trip for sep, for 9 days..... This is what I am thinking of doing, any feedback???
Spend 5 days in Kauai on the north shore at a nice B&B , maybe in Hanalei? (any ideas for around $100/nt?)
Snorkel and explore all the great beaches in the area
Take a helicopter tour or boat tour on Napali coast(which do you reccomend?)
Go to the Fern Grotto, explore Waimea Cyn
Kayak Hanalei river
Go to the Maniniholo Dry Cave and Waikapala'e and Waikanaloa Wet Caves
Maybe go down shouth to Poipu????
And then last 4 days in Oahu staying somewhere AWAY from the big city, but close enough so that maybe we can check it out and experience the nightlife and restaurants.. any suggestions as to area and hotel/B&B???
Go to Kailua Beach and Hanauma Bay
Maybe Waimea Valley and Adventures Park??
Any feedback would be great!!!! Any suggestions on good hotels or B&B's for around $100 -$130/nt would be great!!!

95% of all hotel rooms on Oahu are in Waikiki. That is where you will have the most competition and therfore the cheaper hotel rates. Also if you can make the trip ten days, you can probably find a place both on Kauai and on Oahu for 5th night free.
I know you said you want to stay away from the city. But, if you stay in Waikiki, you are only 5-10 minutes away from getting out of the city anyway.
On the other hand, in September, you should be able to find a B&B in Kailua or Lanikai because there are fewer visitors to Hawaii in September and October than any other months.
Do a Yahoo (or other search engine) search: b&b kailua or b&b lanikai or b&b ohau
Try these sites to compare hotels on Oahu:

I am looking at some B&B's on the north shore..... man the good ones seem to book up early.
One more question..... I just found a great deal on airfare.... $300 RT to Honolulu, but now I need to book an interisland flight o Kauai.... I have found they are approx $150 RT, is that a good deal? Are there any other airlines I could check other than aloha&hawaiian?

I would definitely start in Kaua'i! It's absolutely wonderful. We rented from DJ Colbert(www.kauai-vacation-cottages.com); long story short she goofed on reservations but more than made up for it. She has 2 cottages & an apt. You simply make resevations & mail her a deposit check. The balance is due about 30 days before arrival.Her place is situated on a farm & just next door to an orchid farm. We took the helicopter tour that had no doors! It was absolutely amazing; to land at a secluded waterfall for lunch & frolicking was great. Downfall, if you have long hair...make sure it is extremely secure. We had a gift certificate to Roy's in Poipu;the chocolate souffle w/ice cream is as good as everyone claims. If possible, rent a convertible. It made a grand impression on my hubby!! He left all the planning to me & was more than suprised at several things I booked! according to The Ultimate Kaua'i Guidebook.

You're stuck with Hawaiian and Aloha.
Island Air also has interisland flights, but I'm not familiar with them except my daughter ocassionally uses that airline because they fly into west Maui airport. They are just as expensive though.
I wouldn't think you should have any problem getting something on the north shore. But, as you say, the better ones get booked early.
Oahu is not that big. From Waikiki it only takes 1 hour to get to the farthest point on the island away from Waikiki.
The reason I mentioned Kailua and Lanikai is that they are two of the best beaches in Hawaii and both are always mentioned as top beaches in the country.
