Why is it that the people who whined so much about getting registration on this site now need to constantly get reassurance that things are really better? Could it be that even they recognize how boring and limited this site has become and they just have this need to defend their demand for the change? Face it, all you people who were so sensitive about nasty posts have really diminished what was a great forum.

I've been too busy to spend much time here, but I am pleased at how much more pleasant it seems to be and how many posts there are. It seems that there is a much wider spectrum of topics also.

Jack and Yawn_boring, why are you here if you think it is so boring? And are you serious about telling Patrick that he posts too much but then call it "childish revenge" when he doesn't answer your question? Do you want him to answer questions when he knows the answers and has suggestions or not?

Wider spectrum of topics? Seems pretty narrow to me compared to the old board. The only topic diversity I see here is the constant backslapping and coddling that the pro-Registration clique give each other each day, and an interesting discussion on state-shaped pools. The sterile, criticism-lacking commentary here is no improvement on what one could get if they went to the homepage of a travel destination... all pleasantries and fluff, no nitty gritty.

Additionally, whatever registration did really fouled up the server processing speed? Trying to navigate is like watching ice melt. Perhaps to make up for the dropoff in traffic they relocated the website to a cheaper hosting service.. in Baghdad perhaps. Its pretty sad when a user finds himself cheering "Yeah, I got in!" when the little text box pops up for a posting.

Dry content + Slow navigation equals a recipie for disaster in my judgement.

I think Fodors should repeal registration immediately and rescusitate this website before it is too late.

I'm now going to hit the post button, and then hit the head. Perhaps when I return I'll be half way through greybar.

That's it, I'm outta here for awhile. I just posted a long, detailed reply to a fellow fodorite on the Miami Hyatt Regency and guess what? It disappeared into cyberspace. I'm sorry but I'm not retyping it. This isn't the first time it's happened since registration.

Big Money D is right. If this is what registration has wrought, they can take their &#*@($@ing registration and shove it!

Not that it has anything to do with registration, but I'm still amazed at the number of Hawaii posts.

Makes me want to open a concession stand for leis on one of the islands.

Seems like the pro-registration folks are a bit sensitive and the anti-registration folks are a bit angry. Also seems to me that posts are down quite a bit in most areas that I am interested in as compared to prior to registration. It is kind of boring. However, before I get flamed, I will say I haven't seen any posts that are obscene either.

It's both good and bad. The good part is that the overall tone is more civil. The bad part is that since we can only talk about travel my monkey has to fend for himself.

Big_Money_D did not say it first but he did say it best.
Most of the well-traveled posters on the Caribbean and Latin America boards said "later Mon" and "hasta la vista baby."
Most of the posters still around can tell you only about Sandals or Cancun hotels.
People who could discuss the quirky or luxurious or off-the-beaten-path properties didn't want to be monitored and left.
My own posts have dropped by 75%+.
I'm just not inspired...
I only keep coming because I've been a regular poster for almost 3 years and can't seem to break the habit.
Buy, I WILL quit altogether if things don't pick up and/or the registration-only format continues.
If fodors was looking to create truly "white bread" travel discussions, they were vastly successful!

I'm sorry, I just don't get why you feel there can't be an interesting and stimulating exchange of ideas because registration is required. All it tells me is that the trolls can no longer hide behind false identities and they're the ones that aren't happy because they can no longer flame and sit back and watch the uproar. What am I missing here?

As for the posts that disappear into cyberspace, that's nothing new here. This board has always been frought with those problems.

It's true that registration has driven away almost all who came to inflame, insult and impugn. That's a good thing. From what I can see, it's working quite well. The board is providing information and opinions about travel for adults, by adults.

In a manner of speaking, the children have been sent to their room. Humor is fine. And it's true that a little inflammation can add a bit of spice to the discussion. It's just that now, individuals can be held accountable for their postings. That does seem to be a lost concept in our society....

It's kind of like the "Bizarro World" episode of Sienfeld, where Elaine meets a group of three friends that are the complete opposite of Jerry, George and Kramer. She likes the new group at first but soon tires of the monotony.

In this Fodors version of "Bizzaro World", post-registration all posters are polite, friendly, but definitely not funny and trolls are nowhere to be found.

Come on folks, no matter how you try to paint it this site has become dull, boring, but most importantly to me, there are far fewer posts than before. Like others, I got hooked on this site a long time ago and it is hard to break the habit. I really enjoyed coming here each day. However, it is truly disappointing to focus in on the areas that I am interested in and find only a couple of posts every day, and most of those responding are the same old people. Nevertheless, I'll keep coming here, hoping this site gets more activity, but please don't try to convince me that its better than it was before even given that the worst posters (who I always simply ignored) seem to have gone.

IT seems that before registration this board was becoming more of a general chat room.

Now it's more of a travel forum...but isn't that why most of us come to this board?

What exactly are you guys looking for? I remember some of the old nasty posts (go to Caribbean board type in SDR on text search and read). Thats the type of posts that I don't care to see. Filthy, vile, immature responses have gone with registration. Does anyone miss those? Surely not.

I am just having a difficult time with the password option. I would like to be able to select my own. Every now and again my password becomes invalid and I have to wait for an email of a new password. It is never an easy password to remember, a group of letters mixed with numbers. Anyone know how you create a new password after you are a member?

Don't see a great change in traffic other than the absence of trolls. I do miss some regular posters like Iza and a few others that just disappeared. Perhaps they have new sign ons or are not posting for other reasons. In general though, it seemed like travel was down for about a year now. I can remember others complaining about this, noting times the board was not moving. Registration just made it more annoying for trolls, they went elsewhere, and the crediblity of the forum has improved.

When I first registered I set my own password. To change yours, you can simply enter "post a reply" and you'll see "change profile". Click on that, and after entering your given password, you will be given a chance to change and then confirm your own password.

Sarah, it's easy to change your password.

Go to the top of your screen and find and click "profile" ( next to the welcome: sarah)

That will lead you to your profile where you can change your profile.

I hate to say it, but I think that many of the faithful here already know this:

Many of the hated 'trolls' on this board were actually alternative pseudonyms for people who also liked to give travel advice!

In effect, the percentage of frivolous postings that were eliminated as a result of the fear of repercussions and hassle of registration also reduced the number of earnest contributions correspondingly. What I am saying is that some of your best travelite contributors also had a bit of a sense of humour and registration took away the spirit that used to make this forum fun.

No problem for those who want to endlessly talk for the fifth time how such and such disney hotel in Florida needs new wallpaper but somewhat discouraging for those who seek more unique and funky experiences in off-the-beaten track locales, or those who seek raw, honest, and conflicting opinion on potential destinations, information beyond the usual superficial gladhanding found on a destination's homnepage.

Oh bull poopy, Big_Money_D! Most of the posters pre and post registration are internet savvy. There is hardly a discussion forum of any sort, whether it be financial, travel, sports, cars, what-have-you, that doesn't require registration. People weren't afraid to register because of "repercussions"--registration is a common, ordinary, internet fact-of-life. And hassle? How long did it take? All of two minutes? Nothing keeps trolls' alter ego's from posting and I'm quite sure they are.

You are saying there *were* people writing about "unique and funky experiences in off-the-beaten track locales" and now they are gone? And this, I guess, is your idea of unique and funky? This is your response to the thread entitled "What is your fantasy trip?"

Message: I want a week in Vegas, penthouse accomodation at the Bellagio, stocked minibar with a jacuzzi in the room, ample gambling credits, and a black Escalade with tinted windows, ground effects and a tight sound system to cruise around in. Filthy!

Wow. gt; To each their own, and one person's trash is another's treasure blah blah blah. There are those as enamoured with Disney as you evidently are with Vegas. I'm sick of reading about both, frankly. And, I'm as tired of writing the same things about Savannah as others are of reading them, but you know, new posters come in and ask the same bloody questions over and over. Either you give repeat info, or you rudely brush them off with the "Do a text search response".

Now, because you miss the "raw, honest, and conflicting opinion", I've gotta tell ya...a black Escalade with tinted windows, "ground effects" (Puullleasee!), and a tight sound system" is about as tacky as it gets in the vehicle department! Couldn't you have at least asked for an "off-the-beaten-path" bright orange McLaren?? Sheesh. Escalade--talk about boring.

There now. That feel better?
