if you lim it yourself to the train you are going to be limited. The Fine arts Museum is on the train line and does have a few good restaurants. the Contemporary Arts Museum, Asia Society, Holocaust Museum and the Natural Science Museum are close to the Fine Arts Museum. A short lift ride away would be the Menil Museum, which also has an attached restaurant. Rice Village (also not too far from the Fine Arts Museum) has a number of shops and restaurants.the Alley theatre downtown has some summer programing.

Houston will likely be swamplike during your visit. The dining scene is excellent, just Google for the type cuisine you want and you will get loads of hits. Would advise using uber or Lyft to get around. Galleria area is not unsafe it's just pretty bland, an overgrown mall.
