Hi. I could use some help choosing a hotel in the Union Square area in San Francisco. There are so many hotels to choose from. I'm looking for something with a rate of between $100 and $135 a day.

Also, I was thinking of staying in North Beach instead. We will not be renting a car. Is Union Square in walking distance of North Beach?

Has anyone ever stayed at the Hotel Boheme or Washington Square Inn in North Beach?

Any info would be helpful.

My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn at the corner of Palmer and Sutter in Union Square, just a month ago and it was under reconstruction. They are turning it into a Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza from a Select. We loved it since it was close to everyting.

North beach is not that near Union Square. Transportation is not bad in S.F. with cablecars and taxi cabs everywhere. We had a car but it becomes costly to park when you are in the city so taking a taxi is not a bad alternative.

Union Square is not walking distance from North Beach!! North Beach is down near Fishermans Wharf but a pretty little area that is our "Little Italy". Great neighborhood. In the area, I know the San Remo if you don't mind sharing a bath, no TV or telephone--it's the family mansion of the Gianni family who founded Bank of America and is beautifully furnished with antiques. tel: (415) 776-8688 Washington Square Inn has a great location right on pretty little Washington Square with great restaurants and easy walk away. If you're a good walker, you can walk North Beach to Ghiradelli along the embarcadero and past the Wharfs---safe and fun. Union Square is "over the hill from" there. The cable cars begin at Powell and Market just down from Union Square. Some people feel that Union Square is too busy and too many homeless---wouldn't bother me, but I'm more used to it. Hotel David, Diva Hotel, Donatello,Golden Gate, Handlery Union Square, Monticello Inn,Villa Florence, all probably would be in your price range. Given all that, I would prefer to be in North Beach--quieter and more "San Franciso". If you stay at the W.S. Inn, eat at W.S. Bar&Grill, Moose's, Fior d'Italia, or one of the newest darlings of restaurant city, Rose Pistola--book well ahead for hotels---you can also walk (uphill) but not too bad to Chinatown or you can ride the cable car. You are extremely wise not to rent a car in SF. We live 40 miles south and while we love being so close, it's a terrible pain when we get to the city to have to deal with a car. (we tend to mooch off friend's garages a lot!!) Email me directly if you want more.

We stayed at the Savoy a few years ago and loved it. It's in Union Square (or very close), on Post Street I believe. It's fairly small but a good value for that price range. Afternoon tea and a continental breakfast, as well.

To add other choices for Union Square lodging:
The White Swan Hotel on Bush st. is a small charming hotel,also the Union Square Inn located on Post st.The rooms are small but nicely decorated.Have a good trip!
