Debbie, you should look at the website www.lvol.com (those are "L" s lower case as in las vegas). Lots of comments in the discussion forum and in the Hotel Rating comments, etc. I remember someone saying that Hard Rock is a rather nice place to stay, pretty small casino, probably a younger crowd there...

Both the Hard Rock and Sam's Town are off the Strip, Sam's Town more so. Staying at either of those properties will require some amount of driving to get anywhere. (If that's not a deliberate choice, it would probably be preferable to stay on the Strip.)
I've not stayed at either hotel, but have heard good things about both. Sam's Town is probably cheaper. It's a no-frills, quality establishment, with a lot of amenities catering to the less affluent visitor. I know a lot of people who swear by it. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there, if I wanted an off-Strip property.

Stayed at Sam's Town when Sat. check-in was not available on the strip, then moved over to Strip on Monday. Sam's has recently built 9 story atrium tower overlooking central park type setting. In the atrium are "outdoor" cafes and restaurants, lounges etc. This in addition to the original Western themed Casino, another half dozen places to eat, and the Western Emporium. Rooms were western and larger then average. Ate in several of the restaurants and enjoyed good food. This is no longer a no-frills location. Truely enjoyed covered parking garage so the car did not reflect the hot Nevada sun. If you like western you will like Sam's Town. If you like large noisey crowds and loud music then you would probably like the Hard Rock.

I would have to agree 100% with Sandra. It is which you prefer...western or rock and roll. I don't know that you could compare the two equally, because I am sure they are in two totally different price ranges. The Hard Rock is certainly going to attract a different crowd than Sam's Town. Sam's Town is going to be a little more casual and laid back.

Thank you to everyone with their help. my fmily member decided on Sam's town, this is where they are having a bowling tourntemt and they do have a shuttle to the strip. Hard Rock was was too much money they thought. so it will be Sam's town they are staying at. Again thanks for the help everyone.

For a very nice motel type room (except it has indoor, secure hallways) in the downtown area for $19, contact the Hotel El Cortez at 800-634-6703 and ask for a room in their Ogden House. There is no sense in paying for an expensive room on the strip, since you probably won't spend much time in it. However, if ambience of the hotel is you thing, my choice is the Tropicana. Beautiful grounds.
