Hotels in SF that are not real expensive but good

Going to SF in May. There a so many hotels but I haven't a clue where to stay. Some many are expensive are there any that are decent looking to pay no more than 250.

Hotel rates in SF are VERY date dependent. If there is a major convention in town rates are sky high.

When are you traveling, what sort of room (double, single, family), and will you have a car? (Parking in downtown SF can run $40 a day or even more)

If you will have a car then one of these sister properties are about your best bets:

Best Western Tuscan http://www.tuscanhotel.com. No car necessary. Fantastic location (a couple of blocks off Fishermen's Wharf, not on it.) Walk to Ghirardelli Square, Cable Car Terminal, Boudins Bakery & Cafe (sourdough bread), Ferry Building Market, Boats to Alcatraz, HOHO bus tour stop, etc. Very good Italian restaurant onsite. Close to top of your range, but possible. .

Parc 55 often has Park 'n Stay which includes parking. Great hotel too around $200-$250 off Powell and Market

The Handlery has KGO specials which include parking and 20% off in their Daily Grill (a good restaurant) Good location and good deals around $200 just down the street from Union Square

The Donatello often has specials that include parking. Near Theater district

All of these are in great locations

Check Hotels.com for deals or Trivago.

Parking can run up to $60 a night in many downtown hotels in SF so look for hotel specials.
