HOTELS IN NYC
HI THERE - we are visiting New York City (Manhattan) at the end of July, we have been there twice before and always stayed at the Marriott Marquis (which to us was fabulous), but due to the high rates they have this year, we have opted to stay at a lesser priced hotel - the hotel is the SALISBURY. A friend (who is extremely picky) recommended it to us. It is further from Times Square but we figure we will be doing a lot of walking anyway. Has anyone been there before - and if so - could you tell me about it further, was it clean enough - soundproof, friendly staff, etc. My friend stayed there in 2003 so I don't know if it has changed much since then. Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

The hotel gets pretty consistently good reviews on tripadvisor.com It's not as modern as the Marriott (or as glitzy) but you'll likely have a room that's more like an apartment with some kitchen facilities. Some have complained that the hallways are a bit dreary and the furniture a bit dark but it is clean and well located.

I stayed at the Salisbury three times last fall during a crazy period of apt. renovation.
1. Definitely clean.
2. I found the room to be surprisingly large for the price (we're talking NYC scale, so I mean comparatively "large" in a world of "tiny."
3. Quiet.
4. The staff was very friendly -- I snagged my rooms at the last minute off hotels.com, and the staff was always helpful.
Again, it's not a high-end luxury hotel but it was comfortable, and had a nice feeling about it. I could see the hallways being perceived as "dreary" as it is an older hotel and is not in the same league as the Marriott. But the rooms were fine, in my experience.
The one problem I had while I was there was that one of the elevators was being repaired, so there was a long wait. But that was fall 2004 so I'm sure that's not an issue now.

We used to stay there frequently, although we haven't been there in a couple of years. The location is great; it's not all that far from Times Square (maybe a 15-minute walk at the most). It was definitely clean and the staff was friendly and competent.

The Salisbury is a much much better deal for the money than the Marriott Marquis. The location is also much better.
You will find the average guest at the Salisbury is either a musician performing at Carnegie Hall or European. For some reason, the hotel is very popular with Europeans.
Do a search on the Salisbury. My parents practically live there and I've posted info on this hotel many times.
