We are planning a trip to New Orleans next month and are looking for a reasonable priced hotel within walking distance of most sights but not too noisy.This will be our first trip there.If you have any suggestions of places not to miss please let us hear them.This is a great site for travel info,don't you agree.

My husband and I went to New Orleans last month and we really enjoyed our stay at Le Richelieu on Chartres. The rooms were very nice and free parking. The staff was very helpful and a nice courtyard pool. We were able to walk from here all over the French Quarter. It is very close to great restaurants and the French market for great shopping. There is also a riverfront streetcar that is a very welcome sight especially in the heat of summer. It is very hot and bring comfy shoes for walking. Our favorite restaurants were Court of Two Sisters Brunch, The Praline Connection-great for lunch. The Old Coffeepot-wonderful breakfasts. Have fun and take a swamp tour it was great.

Having been there about ten times (I grew up in Dallas), I'd suggest Mother's on Poydras for breakfast - next time I'm having a WHOLE sweet potato pie for breakfast - hell with eggs! The pies, omelettes, and mocha freezes at the Camellia Grill have been around for a LONG time - my mother enjoyed them while she was at Loyola.

Not exactly charming or intimate, but the Hilton Riverside can be one of the best deals in town. It's HUGE (almost 2000 rooms) and totally impersonal, but it has a great location, right on the river, not far from the French Quarter and close to Canal Place shopping center, Riverwalk marketplace, and the riverfront casino. Here's the secret: when you call to make your reservation, ask for the "casino rate." $89 for any room in the hotel--which is a great bargain for such a high quality joint. You may have to be insistent, but whatever you do, don't take no for an answer--even if the reservation agent pretends not to know what you are talking about. There is definitely an $89 casino rate and you can get it if you insist. P.S. specify a room on an upper floor with a view of the river.

Having been to New Orleans six times, and stayed in a different place everytime, I must submit to you this one piece of adivce. In my opinion it would probably be a lot more fun (and economical) to stay in a hotel that is not part of a chain when you go. (i.e. the Monteleone, or the Bienville Inn.) The reason is, during the summer the prices at the individual (read "not franchised") hotels tend to drop considerably more than the chain hotels.

I would probably recommend staying in the quarter. Though it is considered a dangerous area, it is surrounded by a more mischevious neighborhood.

Be sure not to miss the Preservation Jazz Hall, Tropical Isle, or Frietzels.

Try the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel (****) in the heart of the French Quarter. Make sure you are a AAA member and ask for the discounted room price.

I STONGLY SUGGEST LE PAVILLON 833 POYDRAS TEL 504 581 3111. I VISIT N,O. FREQENTLY AND THIS HOTEL IS THE BEST. THEY ALSO HAVE ATREMENDOUS LUNCH BUFFET AND HEALTH CLUB.

We stayed at the Frenchmen hotel (b&b) in New Orleans
and loved it. The price varies from 59 dollars
during the off season to 120 ish for a suite (but
two couples can stay in the suites). It has a pretty
pool and jacuzzi in the courtyard, and the rooms
are decorated with faux antiques and toulouse latrec
pictures. The hotel is just down the street from
the French Market in the French Quarter. The only problem
is that I wouldn't walk alone if I weren't with a big
guy or with protection at night, and they do require
you to book two nights during the weekend. If those
things work for you, call them at 504-948-2166. (I think
this used to be recommended by Fodor's, I'm not sure
but maybe they can tell you why they took it off, if
they did. Maybe new management has changed it or something?)
