Hotels in Monterrey or Carmel

Almost everything in Carmel could be called "upscale." A very nice one we've stayed at is the Cypress Inn, owned by Doris Day. Another is Highlands Inn and La Playa. Tickle Pink Inn is lovely with beautiful views (used to be owned by people named Tickle, thus the kind of funny name) If you're looking for a spa, Quail Lodge has one but it's located in Carmel Valley and not in the town of Carmel. Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa is a lovely property (haven't stayed though) well located but I certainly wouldn't recommend their restaurant, The Duck Club--boring food, slow service when we went.

We live in the area. One place to check is the town of Pacific Grove. Two great bed and breakfasts....Green Gable Inn or Seven Gables Inn. Both overlook the Monterey Bay. Seven Gables was featured in an AmExpress ad that still runs occasionally.
Pacific Grove has more actual beach area than Carmel and Monterey but you have to live here to know that. Some tourists actually make the ocean drive around PG and think they are in Monterey. Check out pacificgrove.org for information. Pacific Grove is only 10 minutes to Monterey and not much farther to Carmel.

If you are interested in any of these recommendations, you should check and see if they are offering specials right now through the end of May. www.montereyinfo.org -- click on Spring Breaks for specials -- there are coupons. Worth checking into.

Sharon:
Stayed at Tickle Pink and Highlands Inn. I would highly recommend both (very romantic). Just stayed at Carmel Valley Ranch (with children) and loved it. The only complaint was the restaurant was not that great; but lots of nice places to eat nearby. Ventana is suppose to be very nice; but I haven't stayed there. We did have dinner at their restaurant and it was nice.

Sharon, are you aware that Monterrey is in Mexico? Heard in the news about that group of translators for some international convention which ended up in Monterey, California instead of Monterrey, Mexico? And the difference was only one R! Just make sure you know where you're going.

Regarding the post above: I was in a tourist spot on the Cannery Row a few months ago and the guy had all these baseball hats on sale for $4.99. Seems that they printed "MONTERREY California" on the front. Guess he figured out that someone would notice the mispelling and complain. YEP! It's Monterey down here.....
