Hotel Upgrades
Hi all
Will be visiting Vagas in Feb 2005 and was wondering. It will be our 25th wedding anniversary while there, do you think i should ask for a free room upgrade on check in. I have never ask before, didn't really want to be so forward......What advise would you give, ask or hope for the best???
What about emialing customer service and asking before we arrive?
Thanks in advance for any advise, might seem a bit of a strange question, but i want to make it special for my wife and we have already gone over budget.
Regards
Trevor

It probably depends how busy the hotel is. You'll probably have more look early during the week than at the weekend.
You'll also have more look on a free "strip view upgrade" than a free "fantastic suite upgrade".
It can do no harm mentioning you are celebrating your 25th Wedding anniversary.
If all else fails I find that asking what the best price for an upgrade is usually gets good offers coming. I once paid $25 dollars a night to upgrade from a standard room to a wonderful suite at a strip hotel.

Can't hurt to ask, all they can say is no.
But generally, Vegas is a tougher town to get free upgrades in -- unless you're a high roller, have joined their gambler's club and have already spent some money there, or know someone.

I agree with fdecarlo. Las Vegas hotels are in the business to get people to play big on their casino floors. So, first join the casino's frequent/reward club. And if you're planning to play quite a bit in Vegas, concentrate on that one hotel, and let them know. Not the hotel people, but the hosts for the casino floors.
Like others said, it doesn't hurt to ask when checking-in. If the hotel isn't that busy, they may upgrade you. If you want a guaranteed upgrade, then you have to try on the gaming side.

One other angle you might be able to try...
If you booked through an agent that does enough business to the hotel, ask that they call and request it for you through sales.
I used to do this as an agent and it worked at least 85% of the time... but we were a large agency.

Or you could just pay for a better room. If you are trying to create a wonderful experience, why link it to the uncertainty of whether you will get an upgrade or not. Sometimes when you want the hypotehtical champagne, you should just pay for it and not expect to buy it at Wal-Mart

Particularly in vegas before splurging on a suite it may be worthwhile considering - just how good are the standard rooms - At hotels such as Bellagio, Venetian and Mandalay Bay they are pretty impressive. You'll probably find these hotel rooms still pack enough of a wow! Secondly, particularly in Vegas

I just simply mentioned to our hotel that it is our 30th anniversary while booking and could we have a really nice room. You could always throw that in when you book to see what they say. We are going to New Orleans for our anniversary and alhough I already booked a nice room, the hotel said they would do something special, so it does pay to mention a special occasion. In fact, when I called the other day to confirm, they repeated it back to me, so they really do take note of details when booking, particularly the better hotels.

I was going to ask for an upgrade for my bday in July when we went but lady noticed on my DL before I could even say anything. It never hurts to mention your anniversary and if you can get a nice room w/ a view. Are you going around Valentines Day in Feb?

We paid $75 for a large suite at Paris. It wasn't really a suite of rooms as one huge room with two double beds and an amoire with two drawers. In hindsight, we didn't need all the space, but it was nice having two huge bathrooms, each with their own closets. Our "Imperial Suite" was not nicely furnished--the fake flowers in the corner were made of plastic, the room had a lot of wear and tear, and the furniture wasn't all that posh. The best way to describe it was "trailer park chic." When we figured out how much the room ended up costing, taking into account the air & hotel deals, we probably could've stayed at the Bellagio in a nicer (yet smaller) room.
