MikeT: Obviously I've said thanks. Letter to a manager on an upgrade can be tricky, decision might be called into question.
Upgrade represented a $600+ savings over the course of our stay, felt it deserved a gift or tip. Just questioning how much to spend.

Well now that you are giving more detail..like the value of this upgrade, $20 sounds cheap. $50 may be more like it.
I assume this upgrade has come and gone. What did you do at the time? If nothing, are you planning on sending this person something? If so, perhaps a nice tie or watch would be good.
If you are not planning on doing something, this whole discussion is academic.

Frank,
I agree that a letter to the GM or owner would be your best bet. You don't have to mention the upgrade (although since you got, chances are it's condoned by the upper echelon) you could simply mention the professionalism, courtesy, etc. of the employee you dealt with.
Generally, people only write letters when they wish to complain, so a nice letter about a specific employee is greatly appreciated.
