When are you planning on going? If it's this summer, you're probably too late.

You could also stay in the "nearby" towns of Livingston or Bozeman. However, the hotels in these towns fill up quickly during the summer, so start looking into reservations now. Bozeman has many of your typical hotel chains like the Holiday Inn and the Hampton Inn, etc. Also, there's always camping. Good luck.

I personnally love the little, sink only rustic cabins at Old Faithful - especially for a family. If its just the two of us - the Yellowstone Lake Lodge is beautiful. But like the folks above said - its probably too late for this summer. That happened too us a couple of years ago - so we stayed the first night in Jackson Hole and then camped for four nights - at Yellowstone Lake Campground and Yellowstone Falls - Terrific!

We enjoying staying in Gardniers. Yes, was bit of extra drive back into park, depending where one wants to be. But seemed worth it. Depending on time of summer you may still find very reasonable rates. We stayed one nite inn the park at the Yellowstone Lake Lodge and were disappointed. very pricey and rooms were very noisy. But central location. I have heard the cabins are better.

Just get on the Yellowstone Park website and Amfac for lodging and start your search. You can put in dates and they will advise what is available.

Look into some of the smaller towns like Cooke City and Red Lodge. In Red Lodge, I recommend Yodellers. Small but clean and friendly. In Cooke City, Hoosiers Motel. Wonderful owners and although very basic the cleanest place I have ever stayed. I have returned time and time again to both places just to rekindle the friendships I have developed with the owners. And, both are lovely places. If you do make it to Red Lodge on a weekend, see if the pig races are still being run at Bear Creek which is about 10 kms. out of town. They are so much fun.

Enjoy

Just got back from there and can recommend Old Faithful Snow Lodge-friendly staff, nice rooms and close to the geysers. Can be a little pricey, but, hey they threw in snow for great atmosphere!

Stay in the park, if you can and if your time there is short.

Constantly check and re-check with AMFAC by telephone (not online) as there are cancellations all the time.

There are many different types of properties in the park, all with reservations linked to AFMAC.

The park is HUGE. Normally 3 days are recommended to see/experience everything. Staying in the park will help.

Note, however, that the park has basic lodging. Indoor pools and fancy hotels are in the towns others' provided.

We just returned from Yellowstone and the Tetons.
The Old Faithful Snowlodge is ok. A little pricey for the room, so soak up the atmosphere.
We bailed out after the 3rd night and went to the Fairfield Inn in West Yellowstone, which turned out to be $40 cheaper per night and in a motel with more facilities. True, the geysers were not half a mile or less away.
But we had seen quite a few of them by then, including Grand Geyser twice!!
The drive to Red Lodge over the Beartooth Pass is spectacular. So is the Chief Joseph Highway from the Beartooth Pass to Cody, Wyoming.
The Yodeler seems to be a good motel.
Good value for the rate paid.

I agree - The Chief Joseph and Bearstooth are not to be missed.

Did you make it to the pig races, Bob?

Be persistent! Last summer we made plans just a few weeks before our departure. At first I was told that there were no rooms in the Lake Yellowstone Hotel (we had stayed there before-smallish rooms but centrally located, great view from the lobby and quaint). After several calls, I got an agent who told me to call early in the morning and late in the evening when they post cancellations. Several days and phone calls later I managed to progress from no room to a room overlooking the parking lot to a room with a view. Good luck!

sorry, did not make it to the pig races.
I don't feel too deprived, however.
I spent a lot of time on my uncle's farm and he was a pig raiser. I have chased a many a one out of the corn field and peanut field, with the help of my dog.
So, I have seen my share of pigs run.
(Or perhaps I am more accurate when I say that my dog did it with my help.)

Hi Patricia,

I was in Yellowstone two summers ago. We stayed in West Yellowstone Montana. If you can't stay in the Park, I would recommend this town over any other. It has loads of souvenir shops and lots of restaurants. In other words, a toursit trap, but fun nontheless.Almost all the chain hotels and lots of mom and pop places too. Check the Yellowstone website for accommodations and they will have a list for you. Have a great time. Yellowstone is one of the most fantastic places on the planet!
