We'll be in San Francisco for 2 nights, can you suggest characteristic hotel near centre with nice views, tolerable bar etc .... we have young children and will have to be back to get them to bed but won't be ready ourselves!!!!!!

Look no further than Harry Denton's Starlight Lounge at the top of the Historic Sir Francis Drake Hotel which is centrally located in Union Square. The Starlight lounge is a top notch classy place with the best views (all glass around the entire lounge) and a dance floor (with big band, blues, etc. style music) overlooking all SF.

This place is exactly what you're looking for!

Enjoy dining at the wonderful La Scala bistro downstairs for a full SF experience.

The Top of the Mark at the Mark Hopkins is another classic on top of Nob Hill. Quite expensive, but you wouldn't have to stay there---just go for a drink and the romance. And, please don't call San Francisco "Frisco".

The Fairmont Hotel atop Nob Hill has a GLASS elevator that goes WAY up (22 stories). When you get to the top, the view is magnificient! It looks like a postcard. Plus it's free and you can take the kids. There's a bar at the top, too, if you so desire. You'll probably have to ask someone when you get there how to get to that elevator (it's toward the back). Have fun--San Francisco is the best!
