I can say for certain that there is no subway in Alexandria, La. Not sure about Egypt! But, it is very helpful when we add city AND state in the HEADER if there is any possible confusion. This is probably why there are no good responses 2 days later!

Dan, on the rash assumption that you mean Alexandria, Virginia, there is an Embassy Suites at the King Street Metro station which, if there are no conventions in town, will provide a room at under $150 per night. Much less convenient to Old Town but metting your technical description is the Holiday Inn on Eisenhower Avenue, which is across a parking lot from the Eisenhower Metro station. The Embassy Suites is well situated for exploring Alexandria's shops, restaurants, and ambience; the Holiday Inn is in an office park and convenient only to a bunch of non-descript office buildings. Parking at the Embassy Suites is underground and part of the room rate; the Holiday Inn parking is your standard asphalt lot.

Alexandria? Metro? Not such a rash leap of faith afterall. Easy, if you live here and know. Near Old Town, on Duke Street, 100 yards from the King Street Metro station ... the Embassy Hotel suggestion is okay. For a nearby restaurant, try Stella's ... nice folks, decent chef. Welcome to Alexandria, that is , VA. Ciao

There's also a Hilton across the street from the Metro. Don't know if it meets your price requirements.
As for Stella's, avoid it if you're eating outside normal dining hours. It's almost as though the regular staff runs away between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and a bunch of drunk kindergarteners are brought in.

Dan, my husband and I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Select in Old Town Alexandria. Room rate was $169 a night and we were charged an additional $10 for parking in their garage. A little pricey, but we decided to splurge and it's in the heart of Old Town, which is wonderful. The hotel does provide free shuttle service to the King St. Metro station. The hotel is on King Street, as well, but it's quite a walk. Shuttle takes about 5-10 minutes or so. It leaves the hotel each hour on the half hour. When we got back to the station from sightseeing in D.C., all we had to do was call the hotel, request a shuttle to pick us up and it was there ASAP, usually within 10 minutes maximum. Service at the hotel was excellent and the room was wonderful. I highly recommend it.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Alexandria and loved the hotel. It has 2 room suites and is very clean, nicely furnished and seems quite new. We really enjoyed the free breakfast and the manager's reception.(Definitely saved on our bar tab that night at dinner) Parking was $12 extra each night but was in an underground lot as stated above. It is so very convenient to the metro and their shuttle made it nice to go into Old Town for dinner. Rates are running from $154-$209 on weekends now (though we got a special rate last winter there for $129.) I keep checking to see if that rate is offered again because I'll definitely book another weekend, though I may have to break down and pay the little extra. We felt it was quite a bargain! It is my favorite hotel now and would suggest it to anyone. Good luck.
