Honeymoon in Maui

Hi! My travel agent has booked us at the Renaissance Wailea Beach Hotel in Maui for 6 nights of our 10 day honeymoon. I've heard mixed reviews- from "not bad, but nothing special" to "a great resort, worth the price." We are coming from the Kahala Mandarin in Oahu (which I hear is spectacular) and I don't want to feel like we're staying in a dump. Can anyone tell me more about this resort?

I can't speak for the Renaissance, but the other three hotels there -- the Grand Wailea, the Four Seasons and the Kea Lani are actually MORE spectacular than the Kahala, although the BEACH in front of the Kahala is much nicer (and it is a great hotel, just much smaller than the previously mentioned properties)!!

Aly did you choose the Renaissance because you got a good deal there?
Remember to factor in value, IF that's a factor at all.
If you are not budget-restricted in any way, you should choose something other than the Ren., because you'll see it as a 'step down'. But if you chose it partly for value, that is a legitimate reason, don't forget.
But Four Seasons and GW and Kea Lani are all nicer.
What are your criteria?

We stayed at the Renaissance for three days and then went to the Grand Wailea for another three. We stayed at the the Renaissance because of value. We got the Entertainment Book rate of $165. I think the Renaissance is a beautiful hotel. The restaurants are very good and got great ratings in the Maui Reveled travel guide. The grounds are also very nice! My only complaint was the size of the pool. It is pretty small for a resort of that size. It was a little disappointing. Maybe that was because we had just come from the Hyatt on Kaui. When we moved to the Grand Wailea we were blown away! It is a breathtaking hotel. We had then wished we had stayed there the whole time. The Renaissance is definitely not a dump, and if that was the only hotel you saw in Hawaii you would think it is very nice!! If money is not a huge issue I would definitely change to the Grand Wailea, Kea Lani or Four Seasons.

Hi-
We stayed at the Kea Lani for our honelmoon in 1999...this place was awesome..the room incredible..if you can bear the expense this hotel is the way to go, because the others' rooms don't compare with the suites at KL!!

Hi Aly, We spent five days last oct at kahala after a 10 day cruise of the islands. It's a beautiful hotel. we were upgraded to a suite room 1013 or 1012. It was awesome even though they had blocked off the living room. We are going back this august but staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Vacation Club due to a special deal we got. On the cruise we visited maui and I loved it. So we added five days for maui thi year. It was frustrating trying to find the right hotel and atmosphere to equal Kahala. Kahala is located in an upscale residential area. It felt like a secluded resort. After reading everything i could get my hands on I decided in febuary to select either the Four Seasons,Kea Lani or the Grand Wailea. It was a tough choice but I went The Kea Lani. The deciding factor was the room size, the microwave and the refrigerator. My husband and I both love to eat but usually never finish our meals. After soup, salad and appetizers we usually can't bear to look at the main course. So we take it back to the room and stick it in the fridge for lunch the next day or dinner. Otherwise I would've selected the Four Seasons..or maybe the Grand..hard choice. If you're breakfast people try to get the breakfast buffet included at the Kahala. I believe it was $20.00-30.00 per person had we not included it. We did the same for the Kea Lani. Oh! we took the shuttle every morning, the last shuttle left waikiki at 8:30 p.m. So if you're looking for nightlife rent a car. We took a lot a free shopping shuttles and even public transportation to the flea market.Let me stop. I could go on forever. Please feel free to e-mail me if I can help. we leave 8/16. Can't wait. Have a wonderful trip we ever you stay.
