I would recommend Big Sur highly for restfulness and activities, plus great accommodations and restaurants, but it depends on how warm you really need it to be. Check out www.ventanainn.com and www.postranchinn.com. Both are very pricey but recommended highly. We stayed at Ventana in July of last year and loved it. Their restaurant, Cielo, is fantastic. I've heard Post Ranch Inn is even nicer.

Molly, The Big Sur/Monteray/Carmel is nice and romantic for a honeymoon.
For a change, though, you may wish to consider the Gold Country/Hwy 49. The Nevada City/Grass Valley Area could be nice plus this area is much like the New England area, full of trees turning fall colors. Some nice old B&Bs.. Hiking, old mines, lots of old shops, restaurants, bike riding, Lake Tahoe, Rubicon/Desolation Valley, etc. Nice romatic ride up Hwy 49 (The old 49er trail)thru Downieville, Sierra City, over to Hwy 89 and down to Truckee/Donner Lake and on to Tahoe or over to Reno.
Or down 49 to Sutter Creek, Angels Camp, and a not so crowded Yosemite?
October...Warm...maybe?
San Francisco is fairly warm in Oct., believe it or not. And SF is a romatic area (also near Marin, Napa/Sonoma/Mendicino)
Good luck.

My wife and I just got back from Temecula. Spring and fall are the best times there because it gets too hot in the summer. We saw a B&B in the winery area that looked great. It was booked so we couldn't stay there, but the location is great, right in the middle of the vineyards. The city of Temecula is only 5 miles down the road. Lots of golf courses, Indian casinos not far away, and Lake Elsinore nearby too.
Another option would be Catalina Island. Although I can't vouch for the temperatures there in October.

Almost all of coastal California will be knock down beautiful during October. It's our very best time of year--no rain and beautiful blue skies. Southern CA will be about 10 degrees warmer than the Bay area. Big Sur is a good choice, Santa Barbara and the Santa Inez Valley, Marin/Sonoma coast, Mendocino. All are restful and good for honeymoons. Two specific hotels which are very romantic are Madrona Manor (an old Victorian with great food and a honeymoon suite), in Healdsburg in the "Sonoma" wine country and the Inn at Mt. Ada on Santa Catalina. You will hear folks talk about Sta. Catalina being touristy--it is in Avalon, but not after the hydrofoils depart and the Inn on Mt. Ada is set way up on a hill out of town (they will give you a golf cart for transportation to and from Avalon)Oh, another very romantic one is the Ahwanhee Hotel in Yosemite, but try to book right now--that might be too cool to fit into your criteria, but incredibly romantic. Let us know what you decide.

we were in SF for our honoeymoon this past oct, and while we loved it, it wasnt' really warm.
we also recently went to san diego, and i highly recommend it if you want warm weather, if you can swing it and the construction is done, a night or two at the hotel del coronado would be a great place to base yourself for a few days in SD.
have fun!
