Honeymoon destination in Florida?
I am getting married this August 10, and we are doing as low budget as possible--with it still being nice. We also want to go low budget on a honeymoon, but would like to go to Florida or California(?). Leaning more toward Florida. Any ideas for good coastal cities? We really wanted an all-inclusive to Jamaica, but in August I'm worried about hurricane season. Any great honeymoon destinations?
(just to let you know how un-travel experienced I am, I live in Missouri and have never been more than one state away!) I need help!

Well, Cheeca Lodge in the Keys is nice. A funky B&b in Key West would be memorable...There are a ton of great restaurants and clubs both in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want beaches, avoid the Keys. The threat of hurricanes in August is always real. Andrew hit August 24. But that having been said, it's not as if Florida gets nails continually either. In my opinion, if you're worried at all about the threat of hurricanes, avoid the Keys area since it is a lot harder to evacuate from there.
One area that you may want to investigate if you want low-key but romantic is the Sanibel/Captiva area. In August, the rates at the resorts or condo rentals may be a lot lower in August.
Post what exactly you would like from your honeymoon like activities, beaches, whatever and I'm sure that would give a better indication to where to suggest.
Congrats on the wedding by the way!

I don't know how you can do "budget" in the Sanibel/Captiva area even in August, when everything's cheap because it's off-season. St. Augustine IS very nice if you're into history and old buildings. Your best bet price and beach wise may be Panama City Beach. But remember, the hurricances hit Florida, too!

Hello Debbie,
The Santa Monica in St. Augustine, Fl. is lovely. Destin Fl. has beautiful beaches. Possibly check out timeshare sites such as RCI or Interval International which sometimes sell off their excess weeks for a fee, esp. in Fl. in the summer.
Best wishes,
A.M.

Some ideas for low cost but nice & romantic:
Song of the Sea, Sanibel Island
Coyaba Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica
Many lovely bed & breakfasts & small hotels in Key West - August is not bad hurricane-wise there
Also check out wheretostay.com for great traveler reviews
and
unforgettablehoneymoon.com for some good packages, including Swept Away in Negril - amazing for honeymoon & if you get a garden room you can save on the $$$
Tides Inn in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has a suite right on the beach with its own private terrace & staircase to the beach. They have their own website. Very economical & nice.
Have a WONDERFUL honeymoon!
