Don't know exactly where is the best place for pictures however keep in mind that the summer in LA can be smoggy. If its a hot day, the heat prevents the smog from rising over the mountains. So there may be days where visibility is not great for a photo of the Hollywood sign. I am assuming you are coming soon. Too bad it's not winter, the views then can be spectacular. I have often been in one of my client's office in a tall office building in Santa Monica and feel like I almost touch the Hollywood sign, it's so clear. Maybe you will get a good day like that.
I bet if you did a google search on "taking photos of the Hollywood sign" you'd get some advice.

Beachwood Canyon Drive
Before it starts climbing up into the Hollywood Hills, Beachwood Canyon Drive pretty much frames the Sign right down the middle, providing excellent site lines as you drive north. Here we’ve provided three examples of pictures taken on Beachwood Canyon Drive – at Glen Holly, Glen Oak and Cheremoya. All of these cross-streets are located north of Franklin Ave., which is the next major east/west street north of Hollywood Blvd.
These are the neighborhoods where my wife and I took pictures of the sign.

Go all the way up Beachwood Cyn. and make a left onto a smaller street called Ledgewood Dr. This twists and turns up residential streets, over the top of a hill, and then brings you down to a dog park (on the right hand side) right across from the Reservoir. This is the best view of the sign-- you're directly underneath it.
A recent photo I took in that park:
