Hilton or Hyatt NYC???

Trying to decide between the Grand Hyatt and the NY Hilton. Have the same rate for each ($159/night) for Thanksgiving weekend. Please give info on room size/quality, location (mainly shopping and plays), and service.

Any input will help. Thanks!

Have no personal experience with either hotel. The Hilton is on the west side on 7th Avenue and 53rd Street. Within walking distance of all Broadway theaters. Also close to 5th Avenue and Central Park. The Hyatt is on East 42nd Street, next to Grand Central Terminal.
It is a slightly longer walk to the theater disrict, about the same distance walk to 5th and at least a 20 minute walk to Central Park. More restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the Hilton. Public transportation is good from either hotel.

i stayed at the hilton off avenue of the america's in august. the rooms are not what you would expect from a hotel that is $159 per night, but it is within walking distance to the broadway shows, times square, and central park. we ate at shelly's one night and broadway joe's on another both were excellant. if you are going to see any shows and you do not have tickets go to the tkts booth, it is in times square and you can save up to 50% off your ticket if you purchase the day of the show. " annie get your gun" was wonderful, we did not enjoy "kiss me kate" as much. i went off on a tangent....but if i were you i would stay at the hilton, the rooms may not be as nice but it will be easier for you and you will save money on transportation. if you stay at the hilton, do not waste money on a cab ride, it is faster to walk. bring some good walking shoes and be ready to walk fast. if you have any more questions you can email me.

My vote would be for the NY Hilton. I've stayed in several hotels in Manhattan and the room size and services are the best I have found for the price. There are a lot of good restaurants within walking distance.

I'm not sure if I agree with Millie, that the Hilton is not what you would expect from a room that is $159. For Manhattan the rooms are very spacious and the prices have dropped considerably over the past months. A year ago those rooms went for $200. It all depends on your perspective. I'm sure in another city you could find a nicer room for that price. But then again...it isn't just any city...its "the city"! Enjoy your trip!

Gwen, you've made the correct choice. (And you've gotten a good price!) The Hilton's rooms are larger. And, its location is better, especially at night. A previous poster is correct that there are more restaurants to choose from. However, another poster is incorrect in stating that the Hyatt is closer to the theater district. The Hilton is closer to most of the theaters in the Times Square/Broadway area.
