Hilton Head with kids
Hi, I'll be traveling to Hilton Head the first week in April with my husband, 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. While my husband is in meetings and on the golf course, the kids and I will be entertaining ourselves. We are staying at the Westin, so I know we'll have the pool and the beach.
What other things would you suggest that the kids would enjoy either in Hilton Head or nearby to drive? I was wondering if they would enjoy Savannah also. And most importantly, can anyone recommend a good cross stitch shop, again either in Hilton Head or driving distance!!!
Thanks!

There is a cross stitch/needlepoint store (forget the names) at the Village of Wexford on Hilton Head and a newer place out in Bluffton at Belfair Village.
There are several small boats (similar to Zodiacs) that offer trips down Broad Creek to Harbour Town and back. The kids love these as they get an up close look at dolphins, pelicans, etc. I've used the one from Shelter Cove and the one that launches from in back of The Old Oyster Factory restaurant. The boats only hold 5-6 people but do have life jackets for kids.
If you get stuck on a rainy day there is Adventure Cove on Folly Field Rd. It has all kinds of indoor activities ie. bumper cars, video rides, 4 story climbing gym w/ tunnels etc. and outdoors they have 2 minature golf courses, batting cages and a driving range. You can also rent bikes.
This should get you started, enjoy the trip.

I grew up spending my summers as a child in Hilton Head and still do as an adult. One of the greatest things to do with kids is to go to an evening performance by 'Greg Russell' a popular singer who sings under the big oak tree at Harbor Town in Sea Pines. His shows are very popular and he directs the show towards children- it was the highlight of my summer as a kid.
Other activities on the island that are fun include miniature golf, dolphin boat tours, sea kayaking, climbing the lighthouse in harbor town, ice cream at 'scoops' at the bottom of the lighthouse, and bike riding along the trails in Sea Pines!
Have fun!!

Lauren, I spent the same week in HH last year and had a wonderful time, although it was still a little cool for getting in the ocean. We did have some pool time, though.
If you rent bikes for the week (or bring your own), you can ride all over the island. The paths are in great shape. Once the kids have done that, you can do some cross-stitch while they nap. Believe me, it will wear them out! Our group was all late 20somethings and we were pooped!
As someone has mentioned, Harbortown in Sea Pines is a good place to go with kids. The famous Salty Dog cafe is in Sea Pines, too, and the kids (and adults) will enjoy eating outside. If you want to take them to another marina to see the boats, try Shelter Cove.
My only words of warning to you are to avoid the Quarterdeck restaurant in Harbortown. Go next door to Cafe Europa, which has the same great view and much better food.
Savannah is only a half hour away and worth a trip. The kids might enjoy walking down River Street, which has a lot of shops and you can see a lot of activity on the water.
Savannah is also the home of Juliet Gordon Lowe, founder of the Girl Scouts, and her home is a museum. Your daughter might enjoy that. You can also head to Market Street, where some of the best restaurants are. My favorite by far is the Lady and Sons. Best Southern comfort food around!
Have a great time!

The Westin is a great place to stay and the Hilton is also very nice, both have alot going on and on good beach. For resturants, the best ones are
Two Eleven Park...over 300 bottles of wine and fried lobster tails(yum!, tuna, steaks, veal, etc.
Sunset Grille (brunch...also Westin has good brunch)
Charley's Cra
NOT the Crazy Crab)
just ask a local and stay away from tourist traps...Crazy Crab, Nick's Seafood, Crabby Nicks....Horrible!

We go every year to Hilton Head for a week with our kids. The suggestions above are all great, especially renting bikes (great if you're on a plantation). My kids also love miniature golf, and we make sure to go see the fireworks at Shelter Cove -- I think they are on Tuesday night?? It's jam packed and not a fun adult activity, but it's all geared toward the kids and they love it. Stuff like face painting, etc. Go early to get parking.
