Hiking in Big Basin State Park
We have never hiked in Big Basin. What would be a good trail (preferably a loop trail), 6-8 long, for a Saturday or Sunday hike? We would like to do this before the weather turns rainy.
And where should we go for a burger and a beer after the hike
?

I have always used the link above when visiting the Redwoods. It is a great website. About half way down the page you will find BB State Park. He ranks each trail with *****.
We were short on time but we did the short trail which was nice. It is where the Mother and Father of the Forest trees are.
Do not go by GPS or Fodors guidebook to get to it. Fodors California guidebook says that it is 17 miles north of Santa Cruz on HWY 1. This is aboue an hour off from the main area. They direct you to a spot by the ocean. The spot is managed by BB State Park, but it really is just a beach. Just wanted to make sure you have the correct directions.

Absolutely. There is a Fodorite who has posted that same (incorrect) info a couple of times. Try to correct him but it pops up again . . . sort of like a bad penny.
But you'll be coming from the peninsula - right? Through Saratoga.
Haven't been in a while but I'd probably eat at Boulder Creek Brewery. http://bouldercreekbrewery.net/cms/

It's been 5 or 6 years since I was there, but I did the Sequoia Trail loop, and I can recommend it. It's around 5 miles, and was very scenic. There are a few places where you can add some more distance, if you like.
I drove in from San Jose, and Saratoga was probably the first chance to find a restaurant from that direction, but it's a long, curvy though pretty drive from Big Basin.
