Hiking and eating around Vermont's Green Mountains
Hi - We're heading up to Brandon, Vt Columbus day weekend. Looking for a few good (4-5 hour) hikes in the area (Green Mountains or Moosalamoo) as well as a few shorter ones - does anyone have any favorite trails that would be particularly beautiful this time of year? We'd also appreciate restaurant suggestions or stops along the way (we're driving up from NYC early on Friday and have reservations at the Blueberry Hill Inn in Goshen one night)

Brandon is a fine place to stay. You are only 15 minutes from Middlebury.
For hikes, Silver Lake, Falls of Lana, and Rattlesnake Cliffs are good hikes. You can reach them from Branbury State Park. The parking area is just south of the park.
For restaurants, I second Cafe Provence. If you find yourself up in Middlebury there are lots of good choices - Fire & Ice, Two Brothers Tavern, Storm Cafe, Tully & Marie's etc. Rosie's is great for breakfast and/or lunch as is Steve's Park Diner.
I'm assuming you have your accomodations lined up? If not, you may be out of luck!

In case you're still checking, Mt. Abraham in Lincoln Gap is my favorite hike in the area, offering great foliage views. About 3-4 hours r/t.
IMO the best restaurants are in Middlebury. In addition to the ones mentioned, Mr. Ups and the nearby Indian restaurant, both on Bakery Lane, offer very good food at reasonable prices. On a nice day, eat outside at Mr. Ups. It overlooks the river.

Ditto for all the suggestions.
I don't know if hunting season has started out there or not, but do wear bright clothing, like neon orange or limegreen hat or scarf or something that will denote you're not a deer! LOL!
Great hike - up Snake Mountain.

Yes, the "gun nuts", as we call them, are already starting to invade our woods, to prove their manhood or whatever, so be careful. (I apologize to any offended hunters, but we just never understand why they enjoy killing deer or other animals for "fun".)

RetiredVermonter...hunting is a huge "tradition" here in Vermont. Your plumber probably hunts, your postman, your grocer, heck, maybe even your doctor, etc. I don't like hunting either (and I grew up here!), but I recognize that it is a huge part of life for many Vermonters, native and non-native alike. Please don't call my friends "gun nuts" . But yes, I agree there are some idiots out there.
To the OP.If you read this, please post back - I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering how your trip went/is going!

You're right. I should not call all hunters "gun nuts", because it IS a tradition here.
We just object when we see hunters going onto land obviously posted and sometimes shooting a stag -- especially when they chop off the head (and antlers) and leave the rest of the carcass! (It happened near here just last year.)
