Hempstead, NY or Hofstra College

My daughter who is a senior in high school, from a very small upstate NY town is interested in this college. I was interested in advise on the safety of this college and/or town. Would she be able to walk around campus and surrounding areas safely, by herself, with friends, during the day, nite.
Thanks a bunch for your help!

From what I understand Hofstra has put a lot of effort into security. I took a night class there two summers ago and most nights I saw security around the parking lots. Walking around during the day shouldn't be a problem, but she would probably stay on the campus. The neighborhood itself consists of the 6-lane Hempstead Turnpike, fast food establishments, etc. It would be wise for her to use caution, but Hofstra seems to be working on getting better all the time.

I'm Hofstra University alumni! I met my husband there I grew up about 20 mins away from the school, but I still wanted to live on campus and get a feel for college life. To be honest, my father was not too happy, considering the surrounding town is scary and can be dangerous, but Hofstra's public safety really does a great job. No college is ever immune to problems, and the residents of the nearby town tend to avoid Hofstra students, and visa versa. Just make sure they live on campus - off campus isn't so good for student housing.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions!

My 88 year-old father attends the Senior Citizen program (Pier) at Hofstra U. a few times every week. He loves it.

For the last few summers, my nephew has attended their summer programs. He loves it.

Perfecctly safe.

Thanks to all. We are going to tour the campus on the 11/16. I'm sure after that I will have more questions. My big concern is that we are from a rural area where she is used to going anywhere at anytime, not locking doors and is very trusting. Thanks again for your input!

I hate to break this to you, but there were TWO rapes on the Hofstra campus in the past week. I heard it on the radio.

East of the school is fine, west of the school has some not so great neighborhoods. There isn't much of interest walking distance from the school but there are buses that run along Hempstead Turnpike. Nassau Colliseum and and Nassau COmmunity College are across Hempstead Turnpike from Hofstra.

Unfortunately, the rapes did occur at Hofstra. My daughter graduated this year. She has said that often things get out of hand after a night of drinking and smoking pot. I don't know the details of this particular case, but I do remember when we were college shopping we visited SUNY New Paltz. The young woman who gave us a guided tour was going to be a senior that year and she told the entire group that date rapes were a common occurrence especially after a night of drinking in town. We weren't sure what to say when she finished by saying that all the young men involved had been prosecuted.

Regarding campus rape...read the statistics and you will find a majority of schools have rapes reported more often than they should.
Have you considered the State University of NY at SouthHampton? Lovely! and at the beach, and safe.

Thanks for all of the input. Hofstra was the school that had most of her "wish list and/or needs". I will print off your comments and give them to her so she can try and make an informed decision. Thanks again!!
