Help with trip, Beaufort, Savannah, Charleston
We are heading to Beaufort early this summer for a family celebration.
Wednesday- Arrive (Charleston/Savannah) mid-day. Spend rest of day and night there.
Thursday- Tour around area (plantation tour?) and then drive to Beaufort late afternoon. Dinner and spend night in Beaufort
Friday- All day and night in Beaufort family activities
Saturday- Morning drive back (Charleston/Savannah) for day, dinner, and spend the night
Sunday- mid day fly out of (Charleston/Savannah) mid day
So, given this situation, would you fly into or out of Savannah or Charleston. We've never been to either, would love to see both, but I don't think that's going to work this time. So, given our other activities, which town would you recommend we spend our free time? Airfare and timing is lousy either way, so that's not really a consideration.
We love good food and wine, historical sites, lovely walks, and both seem wonderful, just can't decide, help? annie

I hear you on the outrageous airfare. I've watched fares into Charleston double in the past couple of years from my home airport!
May I suggest a couple of flight websites--Airfarewatchdog.com and ItaSoftware.com? Watchdog "watches" for sales on your specific routes. Ita is a fare search engine. You can change the variables so it searches airports within a certain distance of your departing and arriving airports.
Depending on which "big" city you choose as your top to visit, may change the airport you fly into. You could fly into Charlotte or Myrtle Beach if visiting Charleston; Jacksonville, FL if visiting Savannah.
If you can stay until Monday you may have more options with flights too.
Which city?? I'm partial to Charleston. There is so much to do and no way to accomplish it in one trip. Charleston Visitors Center offers the Heritage Pass. It is a discounted pass good for about 10 different historic sites around Charleston.
What month are you visiting?

I would fly into Savannah and drive to Beaufort as you plan, and then spend Friday and Saturday nights in Charleston.
I would stay in hotels in the historic districts, such as the Hampton Inn or one of the luxury hotels on Bay Street in Savannah and the Best Western King Charles Inn or Charleston Place Hotel in Charleston--depending on your lodging budget.

Charleston.
I have visited all three and have enjoyed them, but Charleston just has more of what you are looking for.
Also enjoyed Beaufort, though I can't remember specifics beyond a boat trip and lunch in a small cafe.

Charleston TV the other day had a story re rate increases after Southwestern pulled out. Another vote for Charleston but the ideal thing would be an open jaw letting you hit both charleston and savannah. The plantations tours in Charleston are good but the primo activity is just walking about downtown. You'll find you'll use about a full day just doing that.
Wild thought: It is only about 2 hours from Savannah to Charleston. Why not, when you leave Beaufort go to Savannah [45 minutes] spend that night in Savannah, and then the next morning drive back to Charleston to catch your midday flight. Very doable and you'll have the Trifecta!
