Help with Hawaii
My husband and I are planning a July trip to Hawaii. We have been to Kauai and Maui already, and we absolutely LOVED them both...(Kauai was our absolute favorie). Anyway, we would like to pick 2 different islands, so we tentatively booked Oahu for 3 nights and The Big Island for 9 nights. We are both 28, and we have no kids. We LOVE nature/water rather than city "touristy" places. SO, my two questions are: 1) Did we make a good decision icluding Oahu and The Big Island? Are we missing something? 2) We need suggestions as to some great locations for hotels on each island. We are not huge fans of high-rise busy-busy huge overdone hotels, and we are trying to do this economically.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Cherly,
I would fly directly into the Big Island and spend the entire time there. I think most that come on this forum miss a lot of the big island. It is by the nature of it's name, big. Did you know that you can see wild horses in Waipio Valley? I would research hiking trails and spend a week on each end with some time saved for Waipio Valley. I have been to BI 4 times still don't feel like I know it at all!!! Don't forget Manakea observatory, Parker Ranch, the many ancient sites scattered over the island, rainforest hilo side. VOLCANO AT NIGHT OF COURSE. I would save a couple of nights for this.
There are also many hidden water falls you would have to find (research) off the tourist track. I have a friend who grew up on BI she contends that there is one water fall you can walk under but she only knows how to walk to it can't give directions I am sorry to say.
Also wonder if 3 days does Oahu justice. The museums, cultural centers, festivals ect are what is special about Oahu. I would plan a trip when something is on in a less busy season if possible and then explore. I love Oahu but you hear the comments that come on here. I think those people have largely just seen Waikiki and are completely missing the larger picture of Oahu. Too bad also because you get a better sense of who modern Hawaii citzens are on Oahu.

Check out Margo's Corner.Access to all parts of the Big Island is easy from there. Near South Point, just outside of Na'alehu, the southernmost community in the USA. Small B & B. Family style meals; fresh salads & vegetables from their organic gardens. Think they now have a health food store there. Guest house, other room or rooms (?), camping, sweat lodge. Ask them about the Green Sands Beach! Call 808/929-9614 for information & reservations or write Margo's Corner, P.O. Box 447, Na'alehu, Hawaii 96772. Stayed there in 1998. Tell 'em hello from Linda in Louisiana! IF you go, be sure to stop at the Na'alehu Fruit Stand store & get a dessert & some freshly squeezed pineapple juice.

I so agree with Ginger. If you love nature and the outdoors, spend the bulk of your time on the Big island. I honestly don'y know how anyone could be bored there; something like 5-6 different eco-systems on this one expanse of land! You can literally go from skiing to snorkling to hiking volcanos to rainforest to ranches and horseback-riding to desert - in one day! I don't know that it's as cost- effective to travel directly to the Big Island vs. taking a shuttle flight from Oahu. Have a great trip!
