Help! Which Island/Hotel is best suited for an active toddler?
OK, I've seen some pretty nasty posts regarding one's choice of islands. So first off, we love Maui and Kauai. We think that Oahu, with all its activities, might be best for a toddler and also appease his parents (who love to shop and hang out by the pool).
We'd like to hear from those who've already been with kids on what island/hotel they'd recommend. The Hilton Hawaiian Village (Oahu)has the right pools, but not sure of the rooms. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I agree with Oahu option and would not skip those windward and North Shore drives. I think it is currently a wonderful time to visit Oahu as you won't have those awful summer crowds. Very important not to stay at HHV in August. It was a zoo for me this past summer but I am truly sorry to say Waikiki might not see those kind of crowds for a while even this coming summer. Lets hope I am wrong for Hawaii's economy.

David, I'm glad that you got your thread back. I logged on last night and read this thread only to find some very silly posts from a juvenile posing as me. Be assured that I was not making the ridiculous posts yesterday. I asked the Fodors editors to prevent the juvenile from using my moniker so they apparently just deleted the thread - sorry, but it is infuriating!
I actually have been to Oahu, Maui, Kaui and Hawaii, between '83 and '91, so my info is woefully outdated. I also have never taken kids there, living on the East coast I don't relish an 11 hour flight with them. I can comment on the islands though. You may be disappointed with Oahu since it is very commercialized and can't compare, IMO to the other islands. Too much of a city. We stayed at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider there. Does anyone know if it's still called that?
I still think Maui near Lahaina is your best bet. Lots of shopping and lots of resorts with great pool areas, which are fun for toddlers. I know the Hyatt Regency is still there. We went when it first opened and it was the first of the resorts with the "fantasy pool" areas. If I recall it had a great slide which you could take your child on.
On Kauai we stayed at the Westin Kauai. My jaw dropped when I walked into that lobby. They had those "floating" vases. What a beautiful resort. They took you to a restaurant by horse and carriage and there were plans to build canals so you could ride in a gondola around the property. I wonder if they ever built that? The pool area was more sedate. Not as good a choice for kids IMHO.
On Hawaii, my favorite island, we stayed at Mauna Lani Point in bungalows. These would be wonderful for a family. They had full kitchens (we're talking top-of-the-line gourmet kitchens too, we didn't even have a can of soda to put in the sub-zero though!). There was a beautiful pathway to Mauna Lani Bay, the Hotel. Does anyone know if those bungalows are still rented out? They really were more like condos, very big and stunning. Also Volcaboes National Park is an awesome place. You could all go.
Anywhere with a great pool and beach should be fine for a family. I hope to get back to paradise someday but for now there is still more to see in Europe which is also closer and easier to get to. Have a great vacation!

Curious,
Why not use your real email address? Sorry to tell you that you don't have a copyright on "curious", anyone can use it, don't run to the editors and whine about it, grow up.
As for islands:
I think Hawaii would be perfect with the volcanoes and national park, very intriguing for the little ones.

Okay x, I'll use mine if you use yours! I'd have to be an idiot to use my real email address, especially with some juvenile nut case here who is apparently obsessed with me. Just what I need, to have her start emailing me directly at home. No thanks, but I'll remain anonymous until Fodors requires registration. Then I'll use my real e-mail.

are you seriously saying that only you can use the name curious? Maybe someone else uses that name as well and it is a coincidence. I can' t believe you would get so worked up about that and it sounds like you are the one obsessed if you feel the need to go running to the editors like a whining little baby. I agree with x, grow up already.

Go for it. Let's all use the moniker curious then we won't know who is who, OK? You don't mind then Kelly if I use your name when I make assinine posts and then we can all attribute those comments to you. I guess you're fine with that. Tell you what, let's make it simple. From now on, I will never use curious as my moniker. I don't want anyone else's writing attributed to me and vica versa. Have fun kids.

Oh good, no more Curious. Now who will I torment while I try to pass the time at my boring travel agent job. There must be another mom I can pick on. Please, please someone help me get through the day. Oh well, are there at least some cute guys out there who can marry me and take me out of this misery that I pretend is the really cool single life??? Please, someone, help me!
Now, wasn't that fun Kelly?

Until Fodor's requires registration, your psuedonym is up for grabs and anyone can use it. As to your Hawaii info, curious, you haven't been there since '91 a lot has changed so you really should not be giving advice that is clearly outdated.
David-Do a text search on Hawaii or Oahu and you will find a lot of good, useful information or do a google search on family travel. There are tons of web sites devoted to family travel out there.
