Oh yes Sharon..there is another reason to be in Mass. this time of the year... I look out my window and the beauty of the fall foliage, yellows, reds, oranges..only nature can paint. In San Diego you'd have the same boring weather all the time. We now here have tourists from all over the world who are leaf peeping..

Actually, Parrot Mom, we don;t have "the same boring weather all year round". There are definite seasonal changes, just not as pronounced as in colder parts of the country. No, we don't have the beautiful Fall foliage of New England, but we can visit to see it without having to sweep the leaves!

Sharon, the area you describe in San Diego is known as the "Golden Triangle". It's next to La Jolla and has lots of hitech and biotech businesses. There are lots of condos and apartments nearby, but if you want a garden you may need to go a little further north towards the west end of Mira Mesa, Carmel Valley (suburb of the City of San Diego), Encinitas, Carlsbad,La Costa and even Oceanside. You could also look at inland North County -the San Diego suburbs of Rancho Penasquitos and Rancho Bernardo and the cities of Poway and Escondido. Tierrasanta, another SD suburb would also be an option. Your husband will be able to look for work in both San Diego and Orange counties, although the commute to Orange county is not very pleasant traffic-wise.

I've been interviewing with a firm in the same area of San Diego in an area known at UTC/Golden Triangle. For a newer apartment in the area, I'm running into rates of $1,250-$1,400 for typical one-bedroom units. There are older less expensive units, but some are a little questionable in terms of appeal and safety. As for condos in the immediate area, I've been finding two bedroom units running over $300K. Unfortunately the salaries in San Diego are lower than LA and Orange County and yet the housing is more expensive.

As for your husband's job search, please be aware that the unemployment rate for professional jobs is growing higher and higher each day in this area (two more of my friends got laid off on Friday). I'd suggest that he check to see what his options are before you make your choice to move to either market.

My name/address clearly indicates that I am from Boston, so I will accept any accusation that I am biased. I have never been to San Diego (been to Calif. a few times, though), but hear it is really beautiful. Friends of mine (one a med school professor and one a biologist) moved from Boston/Cambridge to the San Diego area in the past few years and both are counting the days until they come back.

They admit the SD weather wins hands down, and were somewhat puzzled by San Diegans who profusely apologized for the weather when there was an odd fog, etc. My friends both had the same reaction (kind of like, "I feel sorry for any city which feels its worth is measured by the weather.").

My friends miss the cultural/intellectual activity in Boston, they miss the more urban feel. They do not, however, miss shoveling snow.
