Help? New Security Measures at the airport?

Could someone tell me the newest security measures when going through security at the airports?
Please don't yell at me but I need to know are you allowed to take any carry on bags on the plane? Example, we normally bring our portable DVD player. Is this acceptable? Also, I normally have to get hand checked by security due to my hair pins (makes it buzz). Now, will I have to take my hair pins out of my hair? I use quite a few!(I don't want to hold up the line).
Please advise?

You would be better off contacting your airline directly and asking them for such information. They are the ones that know what they are doing security-wise. All you will get here is opinions not facts.

Just back from a trip that involved Indianapolis, Ft. Myers, Fl., Miami, and Vancouver airports. Here is what I can tell you:
Yes you can take DVD and things like that, in my experience. All nail files, nail polish and remover, hair spray, nail clippers, razors, scissors, combs with picks on the end, lighters, knives, etc. must not be in carry on luggage. We were allowed to have carry on luggage but it was searched more than in the past. An electric toothbrush in my carry on was removed and sent through the scanner by itself but then returned to me. Hair spray and a comb were not returned to me. The comb had long picks on one end and the hair spray they said was flammable.
In Miami, our car and luggage was searched, through and through before entering the parking garage. The lines were a bit longer to check in but not bad if you plan ahead. I can't speak to hair pins but they seem pretty concerned about anything that could be a weapon. Best to call your airline and check those for sure.
Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you.

I agree with the postings about checking with your airline. I checked the website of USAir and found what I needed for a trip this week. Basically, before I left I took out my wine bottle opener, nail file, and small swiss army knife. I did have a small nail clipper which either was not noticed or no one cared.

Your CD player should be fine. I am not sure what you are using in your hair . . . if they are true pins, I would recommend a scarf or bandana as an alternative. People who did get stopped seemed to be having to go through everything, while those with "no triggers" like me scooted right through.

It was much less of a hassle than I worried about, but better safe--as we call all feel now.

Travel on!!!

I just check EVERYTHING now and hope the airline doesn't lose it. If my bags do get delayed, in most cases I'm out the $5-8 I need for basic toiletries until it arrives. Not a big deal.

My husband has flown 8 times since 9/18. He usually only has carry-on luggage, so he has made some changes. This is what he has done/reported. He bought an electric razor (he hates it) since no razors on board. No longer carries his Swiss Army knife, since he has seen these confiscated. He has had his bag, obviously, xrayed for each flight and hand searched about half the time. Each time they were especially interested in his computer, extra battery pack and Palm Pilot. As far as he knows, only Pan Am is refusing carry-ons. He flies out of Boston, and has found lines a little longer and slower, but not any worse than on a busy travel time (like Monday AM). No plastic knives even at airport - the bagel place only offers unsliced bagels (they can't have knives either) and some weird wooden contraption for spreading cream cheese. As above, check with your airlines web page - most offer information. Remember, if they refuse any item, they take it and you can't get it back (photos on news of huge bags of razors, etc.). The DVD player should be OK, but they will probably will make you turn it on to make sure it is real.
