Hi! I am planning to stay in Detroit/Michigan around Aug.16-25. Anybody got some good ideas on things to do? (I've done the Ford Musuem,etc.)Thank you in advance, M.

We enjoyed touring the Henry Ford home in Dearborn and also the Edsel Ford home in Grosse Point. Both are open for tours. We also enjoy Greektown. You can also attend a Tigers game at the new stadium. We have toured the Meadowbrook (which was the Dodge estate) and is now part of Oakland University) and it was interesting too. Have fun!!

I highly recommend the Detroit Insititute of Arts. It's an awesome museum, a very under rated one I might add. Hit a Tiger's game, the new park is great. If you're up for some fine dining, the Whitney on Woodward Avenue is a wonderful place for dinner. Have a great time!

Hi Mare......Have you been to Somerset Mall in Troy? (south of Detroit) Fantastic place with the best stores and good food. I live near there....if you are interested in directions or places near there to eat, email me and I will send you the information. Also, have you been to Saugatuck over on the west side of the state? Or to Marshall? If you have time, the Detroit Historical museum is wonderful and the Detroit Art museum has world class art.....

I totally agree with the recommendation for the Somerset Mall in Troy. If you like shopping you will love this Mall. I go there everytime we are in the Detroit Area. It has wonderful stores.

By the way the city of Troy is north of Detroit.
If you like gambling there are three casinos in Detroit and one in Winsor is highly recommended.
And see a Tiger game.
The new stadium is a great venue.

Oops! Of course, you are right, Troy is NORTH of Detroit.....(I have no excuse for typing that mistake...I live about 15 minutes north of Troy)

By the way, Mare, have you been to Frankenmuth? That town (famous for its huge Christmas store and loads of charming little shops) and Birch Run Outlet Mall (fantastic stores) are about an hour and a half from downtown Detroit......just drive NORTH on I-75....they are right off the expressway--very easy to find.

If you enjoy cars, the weekend you'll be in Detroit is the weekend of the Woodward Cruise. It's an annual event where people cruise up and down several miles of Woodward Avenue in every type of classic car you can imagine. People come from all over the country to drive or watch the cars. Several of the towns along Woodward have events (bands, activities) this same weekend. Our whole family loves to go. If you want additional information, send me an e-mail.

Greenfield Village is a must, even if you've gone before. Also downtown Ann Arbor. Not much good stuff now in poor Detroit.
