Help for Big Island, fdecarlo are you there?
Hey there my hawaiin friends. Just booked a week in Kauai, that silly little island to further investigate why people waste their time and money there. We found a house in Hanalei! Will be bringing first time hawaii vistitor family with us!!!!!!
Where to go after Kauai? We have never been to BI. Looking for ideas on visiting volcano...seems the other one is acting up???? So any thoughts on the BI is so much appreciated. It is so big, that planning it can be a bit intimidating, never mind the other volcano burping lately...........mahalo

Hi! My husband and I visited Hawaii for the first time this past August and fell in love with it! We went to Oahu, Big Island, and Maui. The Big Island was just amazing, so different from anywhere we'd ever been. Do a search under my screen name and my trip report should pop up. Good luck!

Kauai and the Big Island is a good combination if you're interested in a diverse range of activities and environments. But if you think you might be craving some nightlife after your week in Kauai, Oahu or Maui would be better choices than the BI. Lists of to-do's have been posted in this forum repeatedly over the last few months. Search for "Big Island" and look 'em up.
As for Mauna Loa, it definitely bears monitoring. When it erupts it's usually a big event, and potentially can impact a large chunk of the island -- from South Kona to Waikoloa, and from South Point to Hilo. The last eruption in 1984 came with a few miles of Hilo. In 1877 there was even a one-day eruption right in the middle of Kealakekua Bay! But the good news is, we'll almost certainly have lots of warning before anything big happens. Many weeks if not months.

Ok, after spending a week at a beach house in Hanalei, we will be looking for a few days of grand resort lux, perhaps mixed with a few days of more affordable island destination. My problem may be that I have a blue book, that really is not inspiring me. I know the funky towns, the beaches, the places that make your jaw drop on Maui and Kauai and Lanai. I don't know the BI, so to stay at Volcano and then a grand resort Kahola coast? Just not finding that vibe that says you must see this north town, that west beach, this east surfing spot.......I know the lava should call me.....it just isn't. Thanks.

OMG, when is Roxy going to finish her BI trip report??
I LOVED THE MAUNA KEA! It has this quiet luxury to it, a soothing Asian-inspired feel, very understated. My beach front room was gorgeous, beautiful neutral colors with dark woods and a great bathroom. The staff was attentive but not pushy. The food was great and obviously it's on that FANTASTIC beach, ohhh it was sweet. And you'll love the orange plumeria logo on everything, there's just something wonderful about the white background with that little orange flower...maybe it's a creamsicle thing?
I'm trying to finish up the report, let me know if you have any specific questions.
gently palming my Mauna Kea keychain,
roxy

Oahu making fun of ah islands???
BI is an interesting place...You've got the lively tourist town of Kailua- Kona and the funky villages south. The artsy Hilo and Volcano, the lux resorts on the Kohala coast (my personal favorite is the Mauna Lani), and the oddly sophisticated Kamuela/Waimea with some great food and community theatre. Throw in volcano watching, star gazing, amazing hiking, kayaking, rainforest exploration and some bizarre geography, and you've got a fun place to spend some time.
Especially since you've been to Maui, I think you should BI there instead of taking a BI on the BI.
