Helicopter in Kauai

What is the best helicopter tour company in Kauai? Should we book the tour before we arrive?

hard to say which one is "best" unless you share what's most important to you.
photography - interisland as they fly without windows
length - interisland and jack harter as they offer 90min tours
safety - air kauai as they're the only ones flying for a while without a fatality

my in-laws flew with air kauai bcuz auntiemaria rec'd it, and they enjoyed it

The OP may be referring to safety record, which, I believe has been posted here before, I'm not certain, but believe it was Air Kauai?

We have used Air Kauai twice and loved it both times.

The first time we were not sure if we wanted to do it so we didn't pre-book. Once in Kauai we decided to go for it and when we called to book it they only had two spots left. We got lucky but we had to rearrange our schedule to fit it in. This was in mid August. Second time we prebooked since we knew for sure we were doing it.

There are so many helicopter crashes these days I would reconsider. I flew in a helicopter years ago and it was beautiful but very nerve racking. So the next time I came to Kauai I researched the safest option for a very long time before I chose to fly. I wanted a safe and comfortable flight where I could see the remote inaccessible parts of the garden island!

Planes are safer for three main reasons.

One they fly with in the Flight Association Regulations, helicopters fly much lower and because of that have little to no room for error.

Two like some others mentioned a plane is designed to fly even with out a running engine, the slightest thing goes wrong with a helicopter and it drops like a fly.

Three there are less moving parts on a plane their for less that can brake or malfunction on the flight.

The weather in Kauai is very changeable and the winds are different than any place in the world. There are at least one helicopter crashes every year on the island and there are yet to be any airplane tour cashes.

I chose to fly with a company called Air Ventures. The family owned company was very friendly and helpful. Their plane was designed for search and rescue. I looked it up on the Internet and it seams to be the smoothest, roomiest; safest and have the best visibility of any small plane on the market. I can’t remember the name of the plane but I still have their number (808 651 0679).

I actually saw more of the island from the airplane. The same waterfalls mountains and canyons were seen but from a safer distance. I loved the views of the coast that I saw from my flight that were not seen from the helicopter.

Have a safe trip!

AllyGirl, read this:

http://cybercom.net/~copters/pilot/autorotation.html

Also, pilots operate in accordance with the Federal Aviation Regulations, not the Flight Association Regulations. The latter, if such a thing exists, sounds as though it deals with flying clubs.

AllyGirl, if a helicopter "drops like a fly" then it doen't drop at all.

Sorry, AllyGirl...bad link. Google "autorotation" to learn about how this maneuver is taught and practiced. Even low-time private pilots with chopper ratings must be able to deal with an engine failure...the more experienced commercial pilots who fly the air taxi tours are subject to more stringent training and checkrides.
