It can be done, but if you've done the mansions in Newport, RI, you could be underwhelmed by Hearst Castle. In NO traffic, the drive is 4 1/2 hours, and it mounts up from there with traffic and stops. One way to go is to go up early on day 1, taking 101 to San Luis Obispo, and rte 1 to Cambria. The town is nice and you can stay at a B&B or inn on Moonstone Dr., right across from the ocean. Next morning, short drive to Hearst (don't miss the elephant seal rookeries on the way).
Time the return so that you hit Santa Barbara after 6 p.m. so you miss rush hour, and reach the L.A. area after its' lengthy rush hours.
A day trip to Santa Barbara (taking coast road all the way) is easier, or one in the other direction to Laguna Beach.
