Yes the water in Hawaii is 'cold' compared to the Caribbean! This is coming from someone who has traveled often to both. I have personally never experienced 82 degree waters in Hawaii and when I dive there I usually have to wear a shorty.

Patty, water off Hawaii is often in the high 70s and low 80s. Caribbean water is around the same temps, this coming from someone who has been to the Caribbean 4 times and lived in Hawaii for my early childhood, having visited 2 times since. If u want cold water, visit California!

Also, i find the beaches of Hawaii prettier than those in the Caribbean. Hawaii has the same white sand and clearer water. Plus, we have mountains in the background, unlike the flat Caribbean. Caribbean beaches are pretty, but you can fins beaches like those in southern Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Catalina and the Gulf. Also, Hawaii has waves if u are a surfer, unlike Caribban. Don't get me wrong, Caribbean is pretty but Hawaii is better and has more to do.

Have traveled to all the Hawaiian Islands for at least a week at each, and five times to the Big Island. Also traveled to Grand Caymand, St. John and St. Thomas. And also traveled all over the world for five years -- from Malaysia to Switzerland.
NOTHING is like Hawaii. The smell of the air, the breeze, the lushness, the fantastic food, the culture. It truly is paradise.
P.S. We live outside of Washington DC. It is a very long trip, but worth every minute.
