without a doubt 2 nights, do try to go to the end of the park at night where you can walk towards the volcano (it is a good 1 hour drive) don't forget to take 2 good flash lights and great pair of hiking boots are you staying in the military cabins? or at the hotel. Lots of luck

We did 2 nights there this past July. The day we arrived we checked out the Thurston Lava Tube and did a short hike on the Iki trail overlook. We then drove down the Chain of Craters Road stopping at various points along the way. We got to the end around 8 p.m. and hiked out a bit to watch the lava flow into the ocean. Breathtaking!

The next day we spent hiking across the crater (overall 7 or 8 miles the way we linked a few trails). Then we cleaned up and spent the late afternoon at tha Puna lu'u (I think) Black Sand Beach. Stopped at the winery, hung out in the hot tub and had a lovely dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Aaah...fond memories.

Hi Travelbud,

Another vote for two nights. Lots to see and do and you won't be disappointed.

Also try going to the Volcano winery. It's a nice little side trip...it wont take you long.
