Hawaii Trip Report
Returned from 2 weeks in paradise on 2/28. 6 nites on Big Island and 8 nites on Maui. This was 8th trip and the best yet.
It really started out bad. We arrived in San Francisco late on 2/11 to find our am flight to HNL was cancelled while we were inroute to SFO on US Airways -protected by American. The counter person worked 3 hours trying to reroute us to Hawaii. Finally got space on 2/14. Since we were planning a couple of days in SFO on return, we just juggled all our plans and we got to BI on sunday. Good accomadations- Mauna Lani, it's the best. As this was the weekend after the Pro Bowl - lots of pro football players.
Didn't do a lot of siteseeing, I just did 3 days of diving and relaxed.
There are some real good restaurants - Roy's, Donatoni's, La Bourgoyne, Cafe Pesto, Canoe House.
BI and Maui are our 2 favorite islands.
Off to Maui and the Marriott on Kaanapali. The hotel is converting partially to Vacation Ownership (marriott's Time Share) and it will be completly renovated. They closed the Lokelani Restaurant and the Lobby Bar in anticipation of the shutdown. I'm sure it will be nice once complete but it's a little tired right now. The room was nice, it's more the public areas. The people are as usual very friendly and effficient. There are several employees that have been there as long as we have been staying there- about 14 years.
On Maui, the road around the north shore of the western part of Maui(Kapalua to Kahalui) is complete and it's the mini Road to Hana. We'd done Hana before and once a lifetime is enough for me. It takes about 1 & 1/2 hours to Kahalui. The hilite of the trip was the Trilogy trip to Lanai. It seamed a little pricey but worth every sent. Leave the dock at 6:30 am and return at 4pm.
Lanai is an interesting island to see. Old Hawaii. Bill Gates tried to rent out the whole island for his wedding. They feed you all day. and the crew is fun.
Typically they will race another boat back to Lahaina.
Good Restaurants- Roy's, Sam Choys, The Plantation House, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and the BEST Hailemaile General Store. There is A Pacific Cafe just north of Kaanapali and I was very disappointed in the food. With all the good restaurants, I wouldn't try it again. Avalon which has always been good is under new ownership and we were advised that it needs some time to work out the wrinkles. Longhi's is not getting any recommendations but I was never a real fan. The above are all winners and HGS is the champion.
Any questions - email me

Charlie, I didn't get a sense for the schedule but as I understand, they will be renovating the north tower first which would leave the larger south tower to accomadate guests. I'm sure they plan to keep guest disruption to a minimum to maintain there good name.
Also, they are still in the permitting process and from personal knowledge that can take a very long time. Hawaii is very environmentally sensitive and the authorities will take a real hard look at the planned work.

Aloha Jennifer,
Yes we did go to Wailea to visit some hotels. The hotels are very impressive as they are the newest on the island. We have never stayed in Wailea but have visited and like the rest of Maui is super. The Hailemaile Gen'l Store is not too far and the owner of HGS's husband, Joe Gannon has a restaurant in Wailea at the tennis club,Joe's Bar & Grill. We didn't get there this time but it has been very good in the past.
Most of the hotels in Wailea have upscale restaurants but there are so many true restaurants that we don't typically go for the hotel food. Most of the time the concierges will give you good advice on local eateries.
