Hawaii Snorkel Trips
I want to take one boat trip while on my honeymoon. What do you think is more worthwhile- the trip to Napali coast while on Kuaui or snorkel trip to Molinki crater on Maui.
Also has anyone taken the sunset cruise to Napali coast?
Thanks,
Missy

We have done neither, but did do the 16 mile kayak trip up Na Pali and the coast is absolutely breathtaking--waterfalls plunging into the sea, verdant mist shrouded valleys, long ribbons of beach, and those incredible mountain spires of green. The color of the water out there is intensely turquoise and you'll never forget the beauty of Honopu Beach. We began our trip at 8am paddling into a rainbow for a few miles!
Regarding Molokini, there's so much awesome snorkeling to be done right from the beach in south Maui and many people here have said is better than Molokini, which can be crowded. And there is equally wonderful snorkeling on Kauai.
If I had to choose, definitely go with the Na Pali boat trip, and try to do it from a company that departs from the north shore area, because apparently you'll see parts of northern Na Pali that you will not see with companies that depart from further south. The guidebook Ultimate Kauai mentions the one or two companies that are allowed to depart from the north shore.

I just got back from Hawaii today (honeymoon, too!), and we did the Molokini/Lanai snorkel trip on Maui through Pacific Whale Foundation, and we thought it was great. Granted, my husband and I are beginner snorkelers, but we did it a lot the 2 weeks we were in Hawaii.
We snorkeled in one place on the Big Island, and 5 or 6 places on Maui. We loved Molokini, and I wasn't expecting a lot because I had read it was overdone and crowded, but we were amazed by the beauty and clarity at Molokini.

In my experience, people's opinions of the Molokini experience are gratly influenced by the company with which they sailed. Many of the Molokini trips are party boats, complete with water slides and cocktails. These boats get to Molkini a bit later, and by then the place is very crowded. PWF arrives a bit earlier and you are accompanied by naturalists, not party coordinators. The trip I took with PWF left earlier, but we were leaving Molokini by the time the other boats were arriving.
I think a trip with the PWF is well worth the time spent, as the naturlatists will educate you about the sealife and the environment. There are species at Molokini that you will not encounter closer to the shore, and you will have a chance to see many unusual forms of sealife, other than the fish. The naturalists do a guided tour for the keiki, which is also good for adults. They will bring things up from the bottom and explain a bit about it for you returning it to it's home.
