Hawaii in November

We will be on our honeymoon Nov 13 - 25th, Maui and Oahu, and I just heard that is monsoon season in Hawaii, I have never heard that before, I thought the weather is always beautiful there.

Tell me it isn't true.

No monsoon season in hawaii. November marks the beginning of the rainy season, but its not like the monsoons of southeast asia. Typically the windward sides of all islands receive the most rain. The leeward areas, especially on Maui and the big island are usually dry. The large volcanos on those islands block a lot of the incoming moisture. Occasionally, Kona storms affect the dry leeward areas, but there not common.

Maybe you are thinking of hurricane season? November is the tail end of hurricane "season" in Hawaii. I put it in quotes because, although there is a designated time when hurricanes are most likely in the Pacific, few make it to Hawaii--at least, to do much damage. In 35 years, I've only lived through 2 hurricanes here. The weather is usually still beautiful.

Because we live in a Maritime climate, the weather can change within the same day. Some mornings might be cloudy, and it can be sunny by early afternoon.

I agree that you may be thinking about Hurricane Season, which ends around that time.

You have never been in an actual monsoon climate to make that comparison. Yes it is a rainy season but there are still plenty of sunny days in Hawaii during November.

I will be in Hawaii around the same dates. How rainy is Oahu during this time?

So: if staying on Maui during November, and considering the wind and rain potential, which town would be the best choice?

Thanks,
Shel

Try to stay on the leeward side of the islands (Wailea vs. Lahaina on Maui and Kohola Coast on the Big Island). They generally get less rain. I was in Hawaii the entire month of November a few years ago and didn't see a drop of rain.

We will be in Kauai in November, which I believe is the wettest island. Which resort is the best for keeping dry, we are considering the Coconut Coast - what do you think?

Angela - We love Kauai, but, yes, it can be rainy there especially in November. The very best place for staying dry would be Poipu - "the sunny, south shore." I would not recommend staying on the North Shore, but, by all means, take a trip up North, but 'phone first to get a weather report. Also, we have found the east side of the island to be much rainier than the south on our travels each year to Kauai. If you are going to Kauai in November and want to be more assured of better weather, I would not stay on the Coconut coast - just my opinion.
