avoid hangovers, sunburns, tshirt shops in Lahaina, the main road during morning and evening commute times.

Wait till you go, you'll be glad I mentioned the tshirt shops and the traffic on the main road. Maybe you haven't provided enough information for us to know what you mean by where to avoid. Is that where to stay, snorkle, hike, drive, bike, eat, drink....

It is vey general question and hard to answer. Most peole want to know where to go, not where not to go !

I personally try to avoid Honolulu. I can see big cities anytime. I, personally, go to Hawaii for the natural scenery, and prefer Kauai and Maui. Big Island is great, too.
