OK, back to work! Good work, Marigonggong, keep up the search! In Waikiki, you have Canoes at the Ilikai Hotel,$12.95 for one patty, two eggs, and the works. Outside, you have the best bargain in Waikiki, $3 for one patty, one egg, and the works with a view of Diamond Head from a partially shaded picnic table at Hula Dog Lunch Wagon, open at 9 am; compare same for $5 at Ala Moana Beach Concession and
Aloha Beach Grill at Waikiki, also with free ocean views.

The cheapest is still Kiyo's Okazu-ya, $2.50 for one egg, one hand-formed patty, tasty brown gravy on rice. Best value? Just twenty feet from Kiyo's is
Don-to-go, two pattys, two eggs, in a bowl of rice and gravy, $2.88!!!!! Partner/chef formerly cooked at Hyakutei, Shogun, and Odoriko. And it's in the 'hood!

yes, PLS go have loco moco for dinner -- help me out w/ all these calories! (and pakeporkchop, who contributed the yum yum tree report) but dinner is tricky. i've been doing research. herewith the preliminary results re loco moco hours:

liliha bakery: 24 hrs
king's cafe: til 5, thereafter must be ordered as a 'special hamburger platter,' tho fried rice is $1 extra
sam choy's blc: only til 10:30am, 11 on wkends
sidestreet: only til 1pm
zippy's: btwn 11pm and 11am

wearing baggy pants for my next loco moco taste test, possibly tmrw.

pakeporkchop, does 'gong gong' mean anything, like 'gung gung' means grandpa? had to ask. also, i've written canoes off my list out of pure outrage at the $13 price.

melissa, peachy pork chops???

Oops! Sorry, I forgot. I actually don't know much about how the peachy pork chops are made, just that it involves canned peaches. The gravy is a little on the sweeter side, with some cinnamon. I'm going to have to leave the deciphering of the recipe to my brother because my mom will probably not be able to remember. Anthony?

I recently went through the Mapunapuna industrial district and came upon some lunchrooms that cater to the truckers, mechanics, et al that work in the area.
As loco moco is a manly man kind of breakfast dish, there are several versions there for @$4.75. Not the prettiest places in the world, but...

I saw it on the menu at Pacific Beach Hotel last week for $8.95. And it wasn't for breakfast, either! But I declined to order it not just for the price, but because I was with some heart-healthy people from the Department of Health and did not want to make a bad impression. hee hee.

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed this thread. I plan to print it and give it as a "light reading on the airplane" gift to my friends Dawn and Daniel who are heading to Oahu next week. So the BIG QUESTION IS.... is loco moco something a haole visitor tourist would enjoy or is it an acquired taste? Either way, thank you for much entertainment.

I'm probably one of the biggest haoles ever to set foot on Hawaii and I'd kill for a loco moco right now.

Nothing aquired about it!
Just good stick to your ribs food!
I'd say it's the local version of chicken fried steak w/ mashed taters.

Kal, I think you are right about that! Actually, I am on a diet right now but will "cheat" a little this weekend. Am meeting one of my friends for a loco moco at King's.

Gottago, for more local kine grinds, go look at PakePorkChop's archive of articles at www.hawaii.rr.com. His latest is at

NEWS FLASH: Peachy Pork Chops Better Than Loco Moco

i'm still salivating from dinner. great recipe, and so easy! can see why ur mom liked to make it. now, at the risk of committing sacrilege agnst ur childhood memories, i have to tell u that the can of peaches i fished out from the back of the cupboard turned out to be a mass of blackish-purple inside, so i went back and fished ard some more. had a choice of canned lychee or fruit cocktail. cd not wrap my brain ard lychee pork chops so went w/ the latter.

after opening fruit cocktail, somehow my attention was distracted and the can ended up on its side. rescued what i cd, but as u can imagine the volume of syrup was considerably less than before. so i grabbed a smaller skillet and halved the recipe, which follows, w/ some further modification:

SAUCE
syrup from can of fruit cocktail (or peaches)
1 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 1/2 - 2 tsp grated ginger, to taste
1/2 tsp dijon mustard

trim fat from pork chops, season w/ salt and pepper and brown on medium-high on both sides. whisk together sauce ingredients and pour over chops, letting liquid reduce for a minute. turn down heat and cover chops to cook thru, 2-4 minutes depending on thickness. then uncover chops, add fruit from can, warm thru. serve.

come to think of it, lychee pork chops wd be equally succulent.

had this w/ yukon gold/okinawan sweet mashed potatoes swirled w/ carmelized onion, salad of red-leaf lettuce and blueberries, and jpnese cucumber sticks.

now, back to loco moco. went to doc yestdy and she says i weigh less than before and am in good health. so i'm going for loco moco number 4, somewhere in liliha tmrw.

melissa, pls post king's cafe loco moco report!! glad people are enjoying this!

WOW Mari, you are making me hungry!! Pork chops & eggs for breakfast does not sound like a bad deal....kinda like steak & eggs, no?

I did not post here because I did not get to go to King's Cafe on the day I planned. Finally went today and ate the loco moco w/fried rice. My friend told me that it was going to be a waste ordering the fried rice, as the gravy would overwhelm it. I didn't listen and plowed ahead anyway. Later he realized that he should have advised me to simply order the gravy on the side.

He was right! The gravy, although very tasty, overwhelmed the fried rice. I should have simply ordered gravy on the side OR plain rice. The patty was nice and thick and not dry. I'm an egg nut, so of course I ordered my eggs sunny side, but there was no egg taste in the entire combo as I ate it. King's Loco Moco: $5.25. With Fried Rice substitute: $6.25.

My friend then told me a secret: That CG's (In the little alley running perpendicular to King St, near Hawaiian Electric) downtown has the best loco moco! But I don't work downtown anymore so I don't know how I will get there. CG's has a lot of the "best" things in plate lunches, though, like their BBQ chicken. So maybe that is another thread in itself.

He also recommended I try Likelike Drive Inn, although he thinks their pancakes are really what makes them famous. Again, another thread in itself.

I'm looking back at your peachy pork chops & the sides, and your plate was a real Pacific Rim/East-Meets-West kind of meal, huh? You're quite the Martha...I mean, Mari Stewart!!!

Just had dim sum lunch with Arakawa-san from Kyoto. Slim and handsome in a George Ariyoshi kind of way.

At breakfast that morning, he had loco moco for the first time and liked it!
Although he claimed that it was a little heavy for breakfast, he proceeded to demolish the noodles, mochi rice pouch, dumplings, buns, and whatever else appeared before him, so it must not have curbed his appetite in the least!

When did you say that Japanese TV show was going to cover this dish?

Dawn & Daniel ate at something called
"Loco Moco Drive-in", they took a picture of Daniel standing in front of it with his "to go" package and then a close up of the dish itself. Looked good, but sorry no details on the address. I'll try to check with them and let you know, but I leave Friday on an Alaska cruise on Princess. Dare I ask them if they have Loco Moco on thier menu? Best regards.

Hey Melissa any big events coming up in Hawaii in the next month. Merrie Monarch is in April? Would really like to see Keali Reichel I might pop over to Oahu for a week or too. I have not been before August in a few years. Any ideas of festivals in town?
