Hawaii experts can you help
Hi : a group of us is planning our first trip to the Big Island early February. Do you think we should book things right now? Such as our planned: helicopter tour, manta ray snorkeling, whale watching? Or is it best to wait a bit and see how weather will be? many thanks

Whale watching might be good to book early, as unless the weather is really bad, it won't affect the whales. the others? Its hard to guess since I don't know how busy they may be. You really don't want to go on a heli tour if the weather is bad, but the weather can change in just a few hours. What are their cancellation policies?

There are less tourists in the islands due to the slow economy so advanced reservations are not necessary for the things you plan to do. It's better to wait until you get there and see the weather reports then make reservations on the best weather days.

For most snorkeling - get out early - and if you don't bring your own equipment - weekly rates are a good deal from a Snorkel Bob's or similiar. I dove with giant 22 foot Manta Rays in Costa Rica - but am not up to speed on doing that on Big Island. Pehaps off the Kona side by the old Hilton on Ali drive? They used to put the lights on at night there to draw them in as I recall. We did a night dive at Kona but mainly saw an octapus jet away - which was cool.
Would also try to get out on a morning helicopter ride - assuming the weather is clear - and check the safety record/experience of the pilots of whomever you fly with.
I also heartily recommend you get up to the Volcano one way or another, and catch some of the shows at the IMAX there, in their helpful visitor center - and drive the summit.
