Hawaii Dress Code vs Islands

We are used to the dress codes in the Caribbean where you can feel comfortable going to almost any restaurant in dress shorts and three button shirt. What is the dress code for the resort area restaurants? In ads it seems that most people have on long pants, etc.. We will be spending three nights on Oahu and six nights on Maui.

Hawaii is not much different from the Caribbean as regards dress codes.
Whether you're in the Caribe or Hawaii, there are always a few nice places that require a jacket (almost never a tie any more) for men, or prohibit shorts.
They are few and far between.
Even nicer places like the Four Seasons hotels in Hawaii are quite casual compared to their continental US sister properties.
My advice: if you know you'll be going someplace nice, check in advance for policy. Easily 98% of restuarants in the islands have no restrictions.

I lived in Hawaii for three years and during the day rarely wore anything but shorts, sandals, and a top. Nicer restaurants sometimes specify "aloha attire" which just means an aloha shirt and pants or a muu muu.

unless you are planning on going to a special place for dinner---and those that require a jacket are few....leave it all at home...we packed drycleaned, packed and carried formal or semiformal attire that was left untouched. My suggestion is wear a suitcoat on the plane and have it in case and leave the rest behind
