We will be on the BI for 4 nights (flying into Kona and leaving from Hilo) and Kauai for 7 nights. Since there are 5 of us, we need something roomy. We had an Escape when we went to Kauai last time and really liked it. We have never been to the BI so can anyone recommend the best car for that island? Do you really need 4 wheel drive?

If you belong to AARP go to their website or go directly to National car rental and use Contract ID 6100120.
I don't go to Kauai for another 300 days LOL but I have already booked through 3 different vendors and canceled. This deal through AARP saved me over $100.00!

dkaymarie,
I just reserved a Sebring convertible through Thrifty on Kaua`i for $198.00 a week plus all the add-ons. It comes to around $480.00 for two weeks which is a pretty good deal. IMHO a convertible is worth the xtra bucks.

I tried the Budget website and this is what I found:
4 nights on BI for a midsize SUV: 151.96
and for a standard SUV it is 170.96. Which size is a Ford Escape, do you think?
On Kauai, the prices are as follows:
Midsize SUV 238.39 for a week and
Standard SUV 244.79.
Can I do better than this or should I book them???

Have you tried priceline.com? Look at www.biddingfortravel.com first to see what others got through priceline and then you'll be able to judge what you should bid.

This link has a few promotion codes from various vendors that are still active:

However, I've tried many promotion codes for many car rental companies, and none of them can even come close to matching Thrifty's normal rates (for a mid size car in Lihue in mid july). To top it off, there is a current promotion at Thrifty for 5% off if you use code AU11 (or 5512 if you are an AAA member). The only exception I found is if you want a convertible, which works out better with Budget if you buy and use the Entertainment promotion code mentioned earlier.
