Hawaii & Mosquitos

I'm going to Kauai for my honeymoon at the end of May, and I was wondering how bad the mosquitos are there. What kind of bug repellant would you recommend?

As far as I know there are NO problems with mosquitos in Hawaii as in the Caribbean. At least I've NEVER had a problem on ANY of the islands! However, "deep woods" hikers might have a different opinion, I don't know! Hikers, what do you say?

I lived in Hawaii for four years, and Kauai was the only island at which I encountered mosquitos. I tried using Avon's Skin So Soft, but it did not work. Perhaps you can use another type of repellent, but the mosquitos are not widespread, it just depends on the area.

I think it depends on how much mosquitoes like YOU. I went hiking with 3 of my cousins and we each sprayed Avon's Skin-So-Soft on ourselves. My cousin D. is extremely tasty to mosquitoes....and sure enough, halfway through the hike, I looked around and there were no mosquitoes around 3 of us, but there was a swarm of them following D.! I'm convinced it has a lot to do with your chemistry.

Hi,

Don't laugh but I read somewhere that mosquito's love people who have a cheasy smell from their feet!!

I don't know how true it is, but in my family the rule applies!! My dad and two sisters always get bitten, my mom and I don't! Guess who has the smelly feet - LOL!

We were in Kauai and Maui last October, and brought along a mosquito repellant with deet in it. Mosquitoes aren't a big problem on the islands, but we did get bitten at times, especially during a hike through rainforest. The mosquitoes do prefer some people over others; my husband wound up with about 4 bites during our entire 11 day stay; I had about 9. I would definitely recommend you wear repellant if you will be doing hiking in rainforest areas, and even if you're out in the evenings. But it isn't a major problem.

Actually, I beg to differ. When we were on the other islands, we didn't have even 1 bite. But on Kauai...!!! As soon as we got out of the car (early evening) I started getting bit, and was attacked the rest of the evening, (unloading the car, and at the casual restaurant we were at, etc.) I was unprepared as we hadn't had any problems before as I said. The next day I had to buy a strong repellent (Avon S-S-S didn't work for us) and put it on after every shower, and keep in the car to reapply later. My husband had to also, but not quite as vigilantly at first, and began to pay for it! Of course, we were staying on the more humid side of the island (North side) and did a lot of outside things, and it was the winter (rainy) season, but the mosquitoes were BAD! Maybe we were more susceptible that some people, also, I don't know. Probably not as bad on the south side, but if you are doing any hiking or river stuff, or anything on the north side, just be prepared!! We still had fun, of course.
