In Aruba August 1988 and was wearing shorts for the first time..I'm selfconscious about my plus weight and wearing shorts. figured nobody would know me there...who cared.. As we were touring at the stone bridge heard my name being called...no place to hide with shorts on.. turned out to be an old friend who had just been remarried on 8/8/88 which is supposed to be a lucky number. Visiting her at her summer home she showed me a blow up of a picture taken that day of both of us on the stone bridge....fortunately you can't recognize me....lol after that.. I don;t care...I wear shorts everywhere... it's everybody elses problem..lol

Yes! Our flight to Delhi was diverted to Mumbai (Bombay) due to fog and lo and behold we ran into a friend whose flight from HK was similarly diverted. As we were bound from and going to O'Hare this was pretty amazing I think.

Trian station in Lucca, Italy...approx 6:30am.
We get to a car and it has only one young kid, about 22, sitting there.
Give him and Italian greeting and we sit nearby and start to talk.

"Are you from the United States?".
Told him we're from Northern Calif.

Asked if we were anywhere near Citrus Heights! Right next door to us! He worked for the local telephone company and we knew all sorts of the same people he did.

Can't tell you how many people we run into at The Sand Bar on Kauai that are located near us. No really...I can't tell you!

Always! My most memorable was this guy Joe Sweeney, who was in my class at the University of Hawaii. Years later, I was walking down the streets of Seoul when someone came up behind me and said, "Hey, did you go to UH?" It was Joe, now living in Korea. Several months later, I was in a club in Honolulu and ran into Joe there. He was on his way to LA. I kept thinking I'd run into him somewhere else in the world, but I haven't yet.

I just ran into a family friend in London. She gave me a hug and said, "Are you here to run a marathon or something?" I was on my way to run the Paris Marathon that weekend, actually.

I usually tend to run into familiar people in Paris and London for some reason.

My boyfriend and I were in a tiny town in Italy last fall and we ran into an old co-worker friend of his.

Somewhat related: We went to a family reunion in upstate NY - over 100 people were there, though we knew very few of them (they were my grandma's cousins & relatives). My sister recognized a guy there from her class - someone she thought was a real JERK...yep, he's related to us.

Welcome back, Melissa! I sent speedy thoughts your way last Sunday. How was the Paris Marathon? Did you make your London/Paris connection with your friend? Sorry to hijack the thread -- I don't seem to have your email address.

Woohooo Melissa, how did the marathon go?

We run into someone that we/my husband knows almost every time we go anywhere!
The places that I can remember:
airport in Nassau
market in St Martin
street-London
street-Paris
flea market-London
street-Montreal
Las Vegas..Sanibel ...
Bermuda-hotel
we have quit telling people where we are going so they aren't on the look-out

I think your manners might be more firmly entrenched than mine Marilyn...or my reflexes slower. That door would've been closed in a nanosecond. How funny...I'm still smiling over that. At least, despite anything their daughter might have told them, they did know their ex s-i-l was well mannered.

Yes, I knew, but had completely forgotten, that Patty had a twin. She didn't talk much about her, only as "my sister" and in fact the first time I ever heard of or saw that they were twins was at Patty's wedding where Teresa was matron of honor. When the processional started and she came walking down the aisle I thought..."what a weird dress for a bride". Have forgotten now the color, but it was distinctly unbridely.

Melissa, welcome back and I hope you'll start another thread and tell us about the marathon and Paris. What was the route. Did I say, or just think about saying, I could see their Heartbreak Hill being the trek to Montmartre, ending at Sacre Coeur...gasp. I do want to hear all about it.

This happens almost every time we travel, all over the world. The interesting thought to me is: How many people do you see who you have crossed paths with years ago, but don't recognize, during your travels? Would you recognize that old college friend you haven't seen in 20 years?

Hi everyone! OK OK I don't usually do trip reports but I will try to have one up by the end of the weekend, on the Europe board. Thanks for all your help in getting me there!

This marathon was my slowest time ever--I did not train enough--but it's still one of the best ones in the world to participate in. The route has changed a little and is now even more scenic. There were 34,500 people running! I think this marathon will soon be like New York & London, where you will need to be in a lottery to get in. So run it now while you can!!

Posting soon......Meleeesa

Twice - once in the Mexico City airport after a red-eye that arrived at 5am; had a high school classmate in line behind me at the restaurant. She recognized me after 25 years long before I remembered her name. A few years earlier, we collapased on Main Street USA to see the afternoon parade at DisneyWorld with our 3 and 5 year olds and our neighbors sat right next to us. Neither had any idea the other family was going (kids were different ages, they were homeschooled and we weren't exactly friendly!).

I grew up in Pittsburgh and am a Pirates baseball fan. I was working for an extended period of time in Los Angeles and went up to S.F. to see the Pirates play the Giants at Candlestick Park. This was around 1990.

The attendance was very low, so I moved down to a field box seat. There was nobody in my row and nobody in at least the next 6 rows in front of me.

About the second inning, a guy walks into the row in front of me and passed by 20 seats to sit in the seat to my left, one row down. It was a guy I grew up with, from kindergarten through high school. He was living in Sacramento and came to S.F. for the day to see the game.

As an 8 yr old travelling 350 miles from our home in Pontiac, MI, I ran into a Sunday school classmate in one of the ubiquitous service plazas on the Penna Turnpike.

Ran into a neighbor on San Marco Square, Venice; a work associate in the French Quarter, Paris; a cousin in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Ran into a friend from Tucson boarding the same train in Geneva, Switzerland late one night. I had no idea that she was going to be in Europe at the same time. What a treat.

We just came back from British Columbia where my sweetie was on concert tour with his choir. The conductor is an amazingly accomplished, internationally known musician who is also one of the nicest people I've ever met. She's from Cape Breton, in Nova Scotia.
Two of my friends live near one of the towns on the tour and decided to come to the concert, although the husband, who was born in Newfoundland, acknowledges that classical and choral music really aren't his thing. I told him he might at least enjoy the medley of Newfoundland folk songs that the choir would be singing. When I reported this conversation to my sweetie, he had a word with the conductor and just before they sang their medley, she asked if there was anyone from Newfoundland in the audience. It turned out that sitting right in front of my Newfie friend there was another Newfie who had been born in the same hospital as he had, exactly a year earlier, and had graduated from a university in Nova Scotia with the conductor, who had also been a guest at her wedding. They hadn't seen each other in 30 years. There was a very happy Maritimer reunion after the concert!

dwoodliff: I am glad to know people come to Arkansas voluntarily.

Jayne11159: I know someone who spells her name this way, I think it is very unique. She states her Dad didn't want her to be "just plain Jane".

Answer to question: We were in Canada at Niagara Falls eating in the Skylon and low and behold a college classmate on her honeymoon and new hubby were there. And she stated she wanted to do her honeymoon in NF because I had told her how great it was and she was not disappointed!!
