Has anyone seen whales on the Big Island?
I am planning a trip to the BI in December, and was just wondering if there is any possibility to go whale watching there? I've searched through prior posts, but they all seem to be about Maui.

We did go whale-watching there a couple of years ago. I can't remember which company we went with - it was one guy and his boat. He wouldn't guarantee anything but his brochure said if we didn't see anything at all, we'd get our money back. He told us he had seen lots of whales the day before, and this was corroborated by some people who had been out in his boat with him. We were out for about an hour and saw what he said was a whale spouting, far in the distance. Might have been, might not have been. We didn't get our money back, though. We actually didn't mind, since obviously when you're dealing with wildlife you can't exactly make an appointment to see them.

Capt. Dan McSweeney takes year round whale watch boat tours from the Big Island and I have heard many good reports. His web site is www.ilovewhales.com
My son who lives on the Big Island has seen them numerous times from the shore. He once saw at least a dozen at one time in ocean near his house on the east side by Pahoa.
