I hoped that someone with more recent experience would get back to you. I was there about 15 years ago and I don't know if it has changed. It was very quiet and residential then with great beaches and a lot of natural areas to walk or bike. There wasn't much in the way of restaurants or nightlife.

I love Fripp Island, South Carolina! It is a wonderful barrier island that is a good example of controled development. They have houses, condos, and townhouses for rent. Big dunes, pretty warm water ocean. You have to go through Beaufort to get there but that is part of the charm.
They are pretty big on kids programs in the summer.

Two weeks ago we attended the Annual Shrimp Festival in Beaufort, SC.. We drove out to Fripp Island...about a 20 minute drive from downtown Beaufort but did not have time to spend on the island. It's a beatiful place with "Low Country" marshes and the Atlantic ocean. Fripp is also well known for being the film location for the movie,Prince of Tides.
btw: Beaufort is a great place with many excellent restaurants and cool historic places to see such as the football field used in the movie, The Big Chill. Shrimp with grits for breakfast ! Good life.

Great place to vacation with small children. Until recently, it was a very quiet, tiny, out-of-the-way barrier island, It's still tiny-one can walk its length in 30 minutes. It's still remote, though an easy day trip to Beaufort, S.C, a beautiful town on the river with antebellum character and flourish. Many use golf carts to get around during their stays. Last few years upscale vacation homes are replacing quaint beach houses. Very limited shopping.
No hotels (or grocery, drug... stores)on the island. Condos and rental houses, though no condos in the opulent range. Narrow beach. Two decent golf courses. Tightly controlled access to island, amenities. Restaurants... accessible only to owners and renters. Overrun with marsh deer. Very few planned activities for children (or adults), though that's changing. No nightlife, unless you have 4 legs. You make your own fun.
